Again, English isn't my first language so bear with me!

There's something rotten in the land of Finland, guys and girls. We've been brought up to believe that our system is corruption free, and those running it are actually aiming for the well being of the people. Of course any person with the ability to think for him/herself can question this, and should do so, but the preliminary assumption with Finns is "Not here, not in our pure and just nation!" Well, sh*t does happen here too, and the farce that inspired me to write this rant goes like this:

They elected a new head of the social security bureau in Helsinki (capital of Finland) some time ago. There was some commotion over the fact that the elected man, Paavo Voutilainen, wasn't really qualified for the job: he had a degree in theology rather than social sciences, which didn't fit the standards. They ruled in his favor though, because of his extensive experience in the social field, and thus he was ready to begin his new career.
And what did he do first? The nation's in financial crisis, unemployment skyrocketing, small businesses collapsing left and right, people queuing for bread donations on the streets... So, Mr. Voutilainen decides it's time to redecorate! Even before his election was finalized he begun the process of ordering SEVENTY-TWO THOUSAND EUROS worth of design furniture in his office. From abroad. Without following protocol. He smuggled the order through the bureau's system, and though a couple of people noticed something fishy it was too late to really do anything.
When this leaked to the public, excuses started to fly. Everybody thought someone else had already accepted the order so they just signed it, somebody was on sick leave and had to be overstepped, the furniture was only available with one retailer so there was no need to ask for offers from any other firm, it's all a misunderstanding, blah blah blah. Now that it has become clear that people aren't going to just forget this bullsh*t, Voutilainen has announced that he had developed a condition which required said furniture because of their ergonomic benefits. Well, that's all good, except the fact that this furniture is NOT ergonomic. The desk is adjustable, but you can find those anywhere! Why couldn't he find a Finnish design firm to do made-to-fit furniture for him, after all we're known for our high quality woodwork and design? That could have saved many jobs and maybe even stopped one business from going under. Besides, what is he doing in an important position that requires a lot of paperwork if he can't even "sit behind his desk for more than 10 minutes" as he himself claims? The latest turn is that experts have started to suspect that the furniture's not even genuine but they're in fact copies of the original designs... WTF? Can this guy be for real!

They say that if Voutilainen lived in the US he'd already have his own cult with loads of loyal followers, he's so charismatic and articulate. If he manages to squirm his way out of this one, I'm seriously going to lose it. Even if you ignore the moral and ethical questions his behavior rouses, he clearly has no judgment whatsoever! His actions and decisions were so incredibly STUPID that I wouldn't trust him with a goldfish, let alone a multimillion euro budget that's supposed to take care of people's welfare!

I'm starting social studies in a month, and feel quite discouraged by this. I genuinely would like to help people and change things for the better, as cheesy as it sounds, but what's the use if those making all the important decisions are complete a**holes? Sucky world. :x

So. Thanks for letting me vent! If somebody has any comments on this please share. Similar outrageous stories are also welcome!

Here in America we elected a guy once who manipulated documents and rumors to start an entire war that has cost billions of dollars, thousands of lives and put the country in one of the biggest economic crisis ever. We even elected him twice.

If all you got is some guy spending 72k euros on some nice furniture, then you're pretty well off =P.

Reminded of that Churchill quote that goes something like 'democracy is a terrible form of government, its just the best one we've invented so far'

p.s. i'm also disapointed, i was positive, from the title, this was going to be about a new band.

p.p.s. since its not a band, i'm stealing the name for myself, 'A Finnish Farce feat Mr. Fuktard in High Position.

p.p.p.s. you're english is great.

Welcome to politics. :(

I'm surprised you Finns thought it couldn't happen there. Your governments have been around longer than ours.
