It is not quite the same. Australia Day celebrates the arrival of the first fleet. The arrival of the British to Australia like America and many other countries meant the wholesale slaughter of the indigenous population. The difference between Australia Day and Thanksgiving being the former simply celebrates the birth of Australia as a anglo society, whereas the latter celebrates the rescue by the indigenous population who where then subsequently slaughtered by a now fit and healthy colonising force.
To say a 'number of Aboriginals dont like Australia day much' is grossly understating the matter. Australia Day being the anniversary of the landing of the first fleet is a huge slap in the face to the indigenous population
I am noted for my laconic understatement, at my best. But they are, at heart, the celebration of a colonisation of another country. And a painful reminder to the native populations of the time when their lives and culture changed irrevocably. It is interesting to note that the British do not celebrate 'Hastings Day', when William the Conqueror beat Harold II (and Harold died) on October 14.
