Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

:P

I know many of you, especially those of you who would actually be on at this exact time and it not be midnight in your timezone, would probably not be in the States, but happy Thanksgiving to you all anyhow.

This thread need not be for this one day, certainly Chanukah and Christmas are coming up soon too. Just no racism and junk please.

Out of curiosity what exactly is the Thanksgiving day in America? It seems to be peculiarly American. Is it a religious thing or a secular holiday or something to do with your Independence or other historical event?

Ah! So it is a sort of secular harvest festival holiday with some religious overtones.

More or less. FDR expanded it to be a holiday of commercialism as well, try typing "black friday" into Google.

Its the day Americans celebrate their survival so that they could go on to annihilate the people who rescued them.

It's essentially a commercialized harvest festival.

Well, come on, did you expect us to treat them as equals? They didn't have white skin, nor did they worship our God of love, so of course we took their land. It was the only right thing for us to do.

That was after we discovered them. "Hey, I discovered you"

They don't have a holiday in Australia to celebrate what they did to the Aborigines? Well its about time they start one.

Actually, perversely enough, we do. We just don't celebrate it with the slaughter of turkeys. A number of Aboriginals don't like Australia Day much anyway.

It is not quite the same. Australia Day celebrates the arrival of the first fleet. The arrival of the British to Australia like America and many other countries meant the wholesale slaughter of the indigenous population. The difference between Australia Day and Thanksgiving being the former simply celebrates the birth of Australia as a anglo society, whereas the latter celebrates the rescue by the indigenous population who where then subsequently slaughtered by a now fit and healthy colonising force.

To say a 'number of Aboriginals dont like Australia day much' is grossly understating the matter. Australia Day being the anniversary of the landing of the first fleet is a huge slap in the face to the indigenous population

I am noted for my laconic understatement, at my best. But they are, at heart, the celebration of a colonisation of another country. And a painful reminder to the native populations of the time when their lives and culture changed irrevocably. It is interesting to note that the British do not celebrate 'Hastings Day', when William the Conqueror beat Harold II (and Harold died) on October 14.
