I believe they are amalgamations of characters from fables, and that those fables were told so often and attempts were made to incorporate historical events into those fables that people started believing that the fables were true.

Jesus probably existed, as Mohammed did, and as Haile Selassie did.

Of course it is a good question indeed, but most modern scholars, historicians and biblical criticists agree that he existed as a person, regardless of religious beliefs. Looks as people pretty much sought a person to follow as a Christ, and anyone who was considered righteous and patriot amongst the Jews was considered such by some people. So is the story of Simon Bar-Kokhba, leader of the revolt that eventually led to the exile of Jews.

Samaritans, who also believe in the same basic idea as we do, tend to reject a Jewish Messiah, claiming he would be a descendant of Joseph and not of David... But really, David himself was of gentile descent according to the Bible.

The Romans had the right idea.

Let everyone worship any god they wanted as long as they didn't bother anyone else with their daft superstition.

Someone should tell that to the Christians, Jews and Muslims.

It was more likely a political tool - let everyone worship any god they wanted do, as long as they accepted your authority, and accepted your culture. Once they saw someone considered himself or others as a higher authority, or objected to their rule - to the cross (or slavery, or maybe just exile) you go.

The Israelites always had a sense of self-pride and nationality, either religious or not, at least among some of them, that's why we were usually sent to crosses and to exiles, and to schism between ourselves, the only way to change that was by force or death. Ask the Samaritans, Betha Israel, Sephardic Jews, Ashkenazi Jews, Bnei Menashe, etc...

And putting portraits of themselves in the temple wasn't really religiously tolerant.

Question:

What do you mean by this?!? :? I'm about 90% sure Jesus existed, but I think of him as just a human being, nothing more. Sure, he was an innovative one, but I don't think he was a god, nor the son of God. Somebody like that, in my personal opinion, would not be human, but the product of one's imagination (an "ultimate idol" of sorts). So yes, I believe Jesus existed, but does that mean I believe IN Jesus?!? Until recently, I always thought that "believing in Jesus" was the same as "believing Jesus existed". I've come to realize that perhaps this isn't necessarily so.

I believe Christ is one way to God and he preached to Jews as a Jew and if the people were Hindu, he would have preached to them from a Hindu Perspective. I have many savior, but they are all manifestations of the same God.

Oh no you're not.

Wow, the random juxtaposition of text... impressive.

You bear my sin tooooooooo.

Well, via the validity of that hermeneutic, I shall throw a bear at you.

Is the idea so that you bear his sin? Which kind of bear do you think is better for bearing sins? Polar? Grizzly? Black? Panda? Koala?

Do I believe in Jesus Christ?

Yes I certainly do but I'm not sure about the whole "saved" thing.

I believe that if people are at least good about the important things in life (even when no one's looking) they will be rewarded.
The others are pretty much screwed.

I believe Jesus existed, I don't think he was supernatural. I think of God as more of an observer.

His work was unverified, and unreproduceable, and his only major publication was written by his students and reviewed exclusively by those already biased towards his work. pfft.

I don't understand how listing "No, I do not beleive in God at all." and "No, and I am an Atheist/Agnostic. God is irrelevant." as two seperate poll questions makes any sense at all. Could you please explain?

In the eyes of Joe Pesci -the one, true God mind you- this is idolatry.

Okay, here's what I heard. Supposedly, the story of Jesus has been told many times before time during which the Biblical story takes place. It has staple elements from the Biblical text: Born to a virgin, challenged authority, twelve disciples, tried and crucified, rose from the dead.

Here's what I believe may have really happened. There really was a Jesus of Nazareth, born in Galilee to Mary and Joseph. He was a religious reformer, actually sermonized, and sadly, was horribly crucified. I heard there's Roman records that verify this. He founded Christianity. When it was recorded much later, other fantastical elements were added from the legends.

This Holy Text business is touchy, and it's hard to say what's true, exaggerated, and made up.
