I joined the Church of the SubGenius back in 2008. They preach a philosophy of quitting your job, slacking off and allowing your weirdness to work for you. It is a support group for "superior mutants". Recently, there has been a lot of discussion about ASDs in their forums, probably because a significant proportion of their members are on the spectrum.

I was wondering if there are any other SubGenius folk here?

I would have thought the Church of the SubGenius wouldn't believe in ASDs.

No, people with ASDs are celebrated as one type of "superior mutant". The SubGenius foundation counts people with OCDs, Tourettes, ADD ADHD Cerebral Palsy etc etc in their ranks. Even their founder is a bit on the spectrum. About the only people who aren't welcome are The Pinks (the neuro typical), but we still accept them because hey, their money is Green!

Slacking off and allowing your weirdness to work for you?

Not to offend you, but how does that work? Do you just live off benefits?

I mean, superior mutant or not, seems a little arrogant to claim that just because you're weird, you don't have to work even if you may be perfectly able to. Or maybe there's some part I'm not getting? Is there something the church does to benefit the world with all that free time?

So what exactly are we supposed to do, then? Bask in our superiority while letting the NTs do our work for us? That sounds quite insane, and just as human as anyone else.

This sounds a bit like the movie Office Space. But discriminating against neurotypical people is seriously uncool.

When The Church was started in 1978, there were plenty of other racist homophobic classist ablist churches for NTs to attend. The Church affords sanctuary to the weird and socially excluded elements of society.

My studies into oppression show that when the majority power are discriminated against, it is not discrimination. We have Womens Rooms at unis for this reason - an exclusive female friendly space for womyn only. When patriarchy is the dominant power, the whole world is the Men's Room. So women should be allowed to exercise their right to discriminate against the dominant power and have a few exclusive spaces.

The Church offers sanctuary for a different marginalised and oppressed group - the "superior mutant". Discriminating against NTs is about five percent of the fun.

Cei - let the humans do our work while we bask in our Yeti-blooded superiority. Damn straight!

No one said we SubGenii are sane, better. smarter or any of those Pink status markers. We're simple superior.

Lostathome - most SubGenii have mastered their weirdness potential and earn a living from it. And while The SubGenii count many members on welfare., some mutants seem very normal and hold down 9 - 5 jobs, BECAUSE their job is their true least resistance path to SLACK. Most jobs are designed to serve the interests of the Conspiracy of Normal, sadly, and rob you of your slack. The Church stands against this aspect of false work.

The Church of the SubGenius are the worlds first truly Industrial Age religion, whose philosophy of PatrioPsychoticAnarchoCapitalism means that they are the ONLY religious institution who actually pay their taxes.

A word of warning though - it's not for everyone.

If they are not better or smarter, in what way exactly are they superior? Protip: the X-Men movies are fictional.

Lostathome - Some of the benefits to the world - GWAR Devo The Dead Milkmen, Gilbert Sheldon of the Furry Freak Brothers fame, Winston Smith the Dead Kennedy's visual artist, Timothy Leary, William Burroughs were a few card carrying members.

When I was really at the end of my tether, there have been times when the support group has kept me in the world. Their bizarre humour and kind encouragement has kept many desperate lonely misfits going, so I think that's of some benefit. Other churches alienated me or turned me away when I needed help.

The propaganda hassles its followers for money constantly, but many people in the Church are in a marginal economic bracket and we don't enforce collection like Scientologists or Catholics. I paid my $30 membership once only, and only because they deserved it - they gave me a good laugh when I seriously wanted to die. I've never been heavied for money ever, and they still talk to me. I even get an impression that they appreciate my social / intellectual contributions. They're good wacky fun. To me, anyway.

There is a spectacular and contradictory cosmology that explains all this, but its also very involved and complex in its divine idiocy. I got a laugh out of it at least.

Trollman: I was never one for marvel comics, but I did grow up a few hundred kms away from a nuclear test sight. There are mutants. I met a guy once with polydactyly. We call successful mutations Evolution. I think we're all mutants, yes?

I wasn't really here to sell anyone on the Church. I was just wondering if there are any SubGenii here..
