We have an estimated hundred thousand Californians that have immigrated here. Not quite an infestation, but you know what happens when they discover a place,it's like raccoons in the sweet corn,Heaven help us. :D
I've got a chart with this on photos bucket but it freezes on me all the time.

I think that has more to do with America's cultural and economic dominance than it's virtue. You need to speak English to survive no matter where you live. If anything it would be another excuse someone could use to bash America.

America is the current economic hub of the world. For the ambitious there really is no better place to seek out opportunities. To give credit where its due America is among the great innovating countries and may be remembered by posterity as one of the great civilisations or at least cultures (Read influential culture). This is because America has become a melting pot of some of the world's best and brightest in academic circles. This is due to the quality of America's universities.

Politically and economically America is in shambles. It's expansionist and domineering foreign policy has created a hornets nest in the East and this is primarily due to the oil reserves there. Rather than funding research into renewable sources of energy the US wage war which is primarily responsible for the intractable debt it has itself in.

The American people suffer as a result of this debt. People die due to not having healthcare, neighbourhoods decay all while the police are being militarised in some quarters and billions are being spent in Israel.

The intelligentsia in America are its saving grace and much of this class are not born and bred Americans. Once the inevitable dollar crash comes the entire academic enclave will leave in droves. When this happens America will be reduced to a large shanty town kept warm by lady liberties' torch.

I bet that while bitching about California and how glad they are to be away from it they try to make their new adopted home just like California and b***h about how backward everyone is.
They are the same type that after ruining the northeast and eastern Canada fled to Florida and ruined it. Having done that, they went to work ruining the Blue Ridge region with their ilk. I've seen their handiwork in each region they've infected. :x

^Indeed.Once they form a colony, your region is doomed, soon there will be a Starbucks on every corner. They are worse than the Borg, fire ants and Termites combined.

The population of Saint Paul, Minnesota is 10% Hmong. I'll admit that Minneapolis isn't diverse by US standards, but we do have a large Somali population. There's also a town in southwestern Minnesota with a Mexican majority.

But yes, the EU has tons of immigrants from North Africa, Eastern Europe and elsewhere.

0_equals_true - Its a bit rich for any of us Brits to call out the US on the middle East crisis!! ! It was us interfering before.

I tend to agree with earlier poster really. I like some things about the US and detest others. I detest the commercial influence that the US has had/is having on the rest of the world however these days it seem to be driven by Brits themselves working in America (The Cowells etc.)

I hate McDs with a vengeance but not for being American. Just because they are the leading junk food joint in the world and easy to point the finger at. I hate English junk food joints too.

I hate the bolshy 'in the hole' type Americans that have to be so OTT and must have their voice heard but I hate that in any culture.

So I guess I don't really hate the US at all. I just hate the stereotype that is portrayed in the media which if anything like the British stereotype is only applicable to a teeny percentage of the population :)

There isn't much US TV I like though. I find most of the comedy very predictable and often childish. Never could see why people love stuff like Friends or Frasier.

I did like Northern Exposure years ago. Was subtle and very clever.

Yeah, they've been pulling that crap here in Seattle for at least the last 20 years or so, driving up the property values and ruining local traditions with their NIMBY BS. Thankfully, we've got a conservative other half of the state and state preemption laws to keep them from getting up to any real mischief.

They keep trying, but Washington has state level preemption for all firearms laws, so the city gets to pound rocks, as they've burned up a lot of tax money fighting with the state to discover.

http://www.immigrationpolicy.org/just-f ... icans-iowa

Quote:
Immigrants and their children are growing shares of Iowa?s population and electorate.

The foreign-born share of Iowa?s population rose from 1.6% in 1990, to 3.1% in 2000, to 4.4% in 2011, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Iowa was home to 133,547 immigrants in 2011, which is more than the total population of Springfield, Illinois.

New York and California are internationally famous for being where suffering humanity risks all to get to. But the American interior, while less famous, is attracting immigrants (as it did when it attracted European immigrants 100 years ago). The American coastal areas get all the fame, so it's probably what people say when they talk about coming here. But the American Dream is only affordable away from the coasts.

4.4% of Iowans (right word?) are foreign-born, and 7% (with rounding) are Asian or Latino. Contrastingly, 33% of Swiss are not of Swiss extraction, and about a quarter of Swiss people were not born in Switzerland. There's really no comparison.

Remember my remarks were in the context of a reply to ruveyn's, and he seemed to be talking about immigration across the Mexican border. Consequently, I was not talking about immigration to New York or California, otherwise I would probably have raised London or Paris as counter examples rather than Southern Italy and Greece.

To be fair, the majority of USA bashing is really focused more on the absurdities within US politics than the actual country or its people.
