All the reviews I've read seem to indicate that it is a soft-soft-core porn movie. I hate those kind of movies. They seem like a bunch of tweens got together and wrote a script without having any idea what sex or romance are really like. The results are usually as pointless and boring as an end-of-season clip show.

What reviews? What I get is......
- It's mainstream and it has an R rating, therefore it isn't porn.
- People getting offended and complaining is porn, it doesn't mean it is.

All those PC complaints against the movie, makes me eager to want to watch it to see what is all the fuss about, and it awakens morbid reasons, otherwise I wouldn't care. However, based on other reviews, it looks like I will be dissapointed at it.

Manufacturing controversy is often part of a films marketing campaign.

That means we don't apply it to the real world.

I love watching westerns with bandits, but I don't love bandits in reality.

It's hilarious that some people wanted to boycott the movie because they get offended, at 2015, some people still want to censor things they don't personally like.

I wonder how many people wanted to boycott the Hostel series or Saw.

That's the perception people have about BDSM: enjoy being the slave and get tied up or enjoy torturing people. I don't know. I can't tell for sure. I'm Not there to stigmatize it but I can see it's something unusual for my taste. A lot of controversy had erupted regarding the content of the book. Some people, especially feminists claim it promotes violence against women while others thought it was too distasteful. I've read the book but I won't see the movie. For me I didn't like it because it was too raunchy and badly written. I don't see what the big deal is. What was surprising is how did it get to be so popular among people who are around my age and older. I was never a fan of romance novels. The worst part about Fifty Shades is it came from a fan fiction of Twilight which would've been plagiarism. Otherwise I hate the book.

I thought it was stupid. I tried to read it because my cousins were all wild about it (so we'd have something to talk about, you know) but it was so stupid that I decided to watch a bunch of 4-to-7-year-olds play MarioKart instead.

I was drunk, and it was STILL just THAT STUPID.

I think the fact that people are gobbling it up with dual spoons is some kind of social commentary worth discussing, but I'm not sure exactly what it says (other than that even people I admire and respect have this really depressing tendency to devour cheap, moronic titillation).

I think there's a difference between fantasy and reality. People who get off reading about that stuff would run screaming to a therapist if it ever happened to them.

That said, consent (provided that it is given without duress/coercion of any kind and can be revoked) pretty much removes the possibility of it being abuse, at least in a legal sense and if you want my opinion in a psychological or practical sense as well. I can understand that some people enjoy this stuff; while I would LOVE to spend a drunken weekend plumbing their psyche, that doesn't make it shameful or abusive. Again, provided that it's going down between consenting adults.

I find the concept of "domestic discipline," removed from any (admittedly, anyway) sexual context, to be significantly more disturbing.

yep. that, and the publicity created when something is banned or cancelled (although that may be different)...it may never stop people from wanting to see something they really want to see. it's a bit like free advertising. such rebels.

I don't know if it's abuse because I haven't seen it but from what I have heard it sounds like shite.

I was incredibly disappointed while watching the Oscars, too. I am patiently waiting for Hollywood to release a really good film. I am just seeing a lot of stuff that doesn't look worth spending 7 - 10 bucks on. If I am gonna spend my money, I want it to at least be better than what's available for free online.

Uh-oh! First case potentially linked to the films.

Well, there's another idiot who believes what the media told him Women Want before he listens to what the woman in front of him says she wants.

Take a lesson. In dealings with people, LOOK AT and LISTEN TO the person in front of you instead of attempting to draw conclusions based upon what advertisements/books/magazines/movies/TV says "demographic X" thinks/does/is like.

OTOH, in dealings with people, TELL THE TRUTH. Be up-front, open, and honest instead of thinking that, if they "really love" or "really understand" you, they will be able to read your mind.

Because, to be frank, NO ONE has all that great a theory of any mind that is not his own. I think it was John Steinbeck (I believe somewhere in The Winter of Our Discontent) who said that no one ever really knows or understands the mind of another; the best he can do is to look at his own mind and assume that others' are like his.

That assumption is oftentimes a mistake.

Avoiding that mistake is why we have COMMUNICATION.

Shame we so often fail to USE IT.

It is an incredibly poor depiction of a BDSM relationship. I understand that it is meant to be fantasy, but there are such things as healthy BDSM practices, and what Christian and Anastasia engage in are NOT healthy BDSM practices. If Christian Grey were a real person doing all of those things, he most likely would end up spending a couple of decades in prison before facing civil commitment as a Level III Sex Offender. And rightfully so, since he clearly has the bare minimal conceptual grasp of the boundaries of others as long as his sexual appetites are concerned.

While there's no doubt that the books and the movies are absolutely terrible and full of outright abuse, I would question whether or not it is directly contributing to the abuse of women in real life.

I think that the argument against it is that it reinforces the belief that abusive behaviour can be excused if the man is nice sometimes and is good looking, rather than the book itself acutally causing abuse. Well, that's my irk with it anyway.

Here's a good summary by Jenny Trout.
