A national race is boiling down to just a handful of states: Arizona, Georgia, Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania.

Arizona appears to be trending toward Biden, which means the Democrat would have to win two of the three so-called 2016 "blue wall" states - Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania - to secure victory.

Biden trails in all three, but the remaining votes to be counted will favour the Democrat - perhaps by enough to pull him ahead.

There are more than 1.4 million vote-by-mail ballots left to count in Pennsylvania, and it could take days to tabulate them all. The big cities in Michigan (Detroit) and Wisconsin (Milwaukee) are also yet to fully report, and they will heavily tilt toward the Democrats.

Meanwhile, Georgia is a wildcard. What seemed heading towards a comfortable Trump win earlier on Tuesday has ended up in a dead heat. Results from Biden-friendly Atlanta was, improbably enough, delayed by a broken water pipe in a vote-counting location.

A Democratic win in Georgia would mean Biden only has to carry one of those Midwest states.

As the remaining votes to be counted come from big cities, it's likely they would change the outcome.

Time will tell.

He's going to have an interesting next few years, what with no longer being immune from criminal prosecution and all.

[not serious]He could disappear after the election and leave the country to avoid criminal prosecution. People will be reporting sightings for the years to come![/not serious]

A secret meeting between Trump, Elvis and Bigfoot has already taken place.

I heard D.B. Cooper was there also.

The Lock Ness Monster didn't make the meeting. Couldn't pay the bus fare (it was about $3.50).

Strictly speaking, it will be weeks before any state is won by any candidate. All we have so far is some preliminary announcements.

I don't know about all states, but in general, the local vote must be counted and canvassed by the local election boards. This can take anywhere from one to three weeks. They then have to send the results to the state government, generally the governor, for the state to canvass the report. This canvass can take another couple of weeks or so. Only when this is done is the winner of the state official and electoral voters for that candidate be selected.

The electoral college will meet on December 14, 2020. The states should finished their canvasses and identified the winners and the electoral voters by December 8th, but it isn't absolutely required.

All the election night coverage does is provide entertainment and give us an idea of who likely won.

Edit: I had the electoral college dates wrong. They are now fixed.

I read last night that 51% of military vets were found in exit polls to support Trump. That is supposedly way down from normal elections.

at least one psychologist who has studied this concluded that right-wingers tend to not like or trust polls or pollsters and tend to misrepresent their opinions to them.

They actually call it the "shy tory" effect named after the British elections and Brexit where younger conservatives were too scared to voice their real opinions (mostly because they couldn't defend being selfish) so lied to pollsters.

here it is not shyness but a simple bloodyminded refusal to tell the truth to them, if they deign to respond to them at all.

vocal Arizona republicans appear to be diverging from the national party with their calls to

"Count the vote"

While Trump and most others continue to try to:

"Stop the count"
