It's also ironic given how sadism and other associated traits make them at least a bit more likely to see the inside of a cell themselves.

I have heard of people say about how prison is like a holiday camp. Usually their information comes from numpty tabloids like The Daily Mail and other such media. In some prisons today you can have small luxuries such as playing pool at a pool table - supposedly, anyway. But from what I can gather, such activities are extremely time limited anyway.

I think some people yearn for prisons to be empty cells with a toilet where people are fed "bread and water" and nothing else. I'm not sure why there is such a desire for this? Maybe people are disgusted with prisoners?

It presumably varies a bit depending on country, Norway's prisons are probably the closest to summer camp.

I've never been inside so I don't know how it is these days, but I wouldn't want to find out the hard way. I would think the knock-on effects would be pretty rotten too. Doesn't look good on the CV. The gov tends to seize a lot of convicted people's assets these days and it's not limited to the money they might have stolen.

Those toilets in the middle of the cells don't look very private.

yeah I mean there's nothing much like the liberty you feel after taking your first in public dump....so I've heard

It'd be an advantage to be an ancient Roman before getting jailed in the 21st century. Here are some of their public toilets:

Marvellous race, the Romans.

I think it was the Daily Mail who "bravely" exposed the crafty practice of sneaking a bit of hash past the goalie to the inmate. At visiting time the girlfriend would give her incarcerated sweetheart a French kiss, and pass the substances on via the mouth. Since they tightened up security the easiest way now is to drop it from a drone into the prison exercise yard. Or so I heard.

Only because no one's used them in ages. When they were in use they'd have been just as nasty. :P

^^^ based on the state of public facilities in Paris, Rome and London, not much has changed...perhaps the outdoor nature of the roman cisterns meant the smell was bearable and you didn't have to stand in puddles of tourist pee...

It's been my observation that the people in comment sections talking about crime are often times only marginally better people than the actual criminals. Or, just as bad, but lacking the guts and commitment to follow through.

I mostly agree, although I'd also say inhibition/disinhibition plays a role. They're too inhibited to display those traits broadly, but they act on them when there's nothing checking those impulses, like a socially acceptable target (criminals, the unhoused, immigrants, etc).

It's a big part of the difference between completely unpredictable antisocial types and the antisocial types who learn to conceal those traits most of the time only to display them in private, or once they have enough power to reduce the risk of backlash, or whatever.

Sometimes they live for several years on death row before getting executed, sometimes not. In America it depends on which state it is in as some are brutal and quick while other states will take forever with multiple sometimes mandatory appeals before execution. Unless mandatory, those who wish to die will not appeal and those who are afraid to die will appeal. They are in a version of supermax incarceration, locked in their steel and concrete box 23 hours a day with 1 hour of monitored usually solo 'yard time'. Barring a miracle that cell will be their home until they die, which eventually will break many of them down mentally and emotionally until they both fear and desire their own death.

I can understand why people would want to live even if it was in prison, I can also understand why someone would want to die. Sociopaths and psychopaths don't feel any remorse for anything they ever did so really don't want to die. 'Normal" people who kill others in an emotional outburst eventually will have some sort of emotional response, some so severe that they see death as their only escape from constantly reliving the nightmare in their minds over and over and over and over and.........

Say we get distracted by our phone for a second while driving and cross over into the opposite lane, causing an oncoming school bus to crash, killing all the children inside. Do we want to live in prison for years, or do we want to die?

I knew a guy who was executed for murder. They executed his brother, too. I never met the brother, but I saw him on occasion when he would try to put a hex on me.

Good riddance to both of them.

The practice has been dying out in the US, I think it's something like half the states have it either banned or on long term hiatus, and even the states that do have an use it are doing so less frequently than they used to. Between the costs associated with making sure that all the appeals are heard, the times when they get it wrong and just the more reliable options to just put people behind bars permanently, there's just not benefit to it. And, there's the issue that with so many appeals the family of the victims doesn't really get any real finality until decades down the line in some cases.

The whole thing made far more sense back in olden times when it was easier to get away with criminal acts and harder to keep people behind bars for long periods of time. These days, it's not applied anywhere near frequently enough to serve as any sort of deterrent. And quite honestly, I don't know how many people are deterred by it versus being sent to prison for the rest of their lives.

I believe (without checking AI or doing a fact check) my memory serves me correctly, the death penalty does not work as a deterrent. What might work is the "Judge Dredd" method where police act as judge, jury and executioner which was actually being used by former Filipino president Rodrigo Duarte. Unfortunately we don't know what percentage of the 6000 + suspects who were executed on the spot were innocent people.
