This is kinda weird, but when I was little, sometimes I'd think about living forever... and ever... and ever... and ever... and ever... and ever... and ever... and feel really depressed and uncomfortable with the concept. My brother felt the same way. If you think about it, it's almost disturbing. Even my brother asked my mom if that's true, can he "kill himself in heaven if he gets bored..." LOL, it's funny to think of a kid say that, and morbid too! We were like 11 and 9 when we both thought of that. After reading stuff on this board I freaked myself out again tonight.

Anybody ever feel this way? (PS, I know, we were some crazy kids!)

If the Earth were to be destroyed, you would just be floating is space forever, unable to kill yourself. (I'm assuming living for eternity bars you from dying in anyway).

I think eternity is a frightening concept to people because they don't view it as an existence where you continue to progress after life. Many people think we play harps and sing praises and that's it. I can't believe that we would go through life, only to stop growing afterwords. No, I think that we would continue to live, not just exist. It's just life on a bigger scale. We have the entire universe to explore with possibilities we can't at this time conceive! Instead of being depressed, we can realize it's an opportunity to grow, learn and enjoy the journey.

Hmmmm! Wait until you get to my age!

Don't worry... life begins at 120.

Eternity is theoretically unattainable but I'm willing to try for a millennium or two for starters. I sincerely doubt I'll have the option.

If the universe ends in the big freeze I'd imagine as the trillions of years go by you would go absolutely and completely insane floating around for ever and ever and ever............. 8O

Like all chemical processes thinking requires a limited temperature range to be in operation. At absolute zero temperature one no longer thinks.

Nukes foil immortals constructed of standard atoms.

Anyway, there are a number of easier ways to rend such a being into an unthinking mass of molecules. Thats close enough to death.

Most people have trouble imagining eternity. But there's an easy way to do it. Picture yourself standing in the express line at the supermarket. And everyone ahead of you has eleven items. And they all want to pay by check. And no one has their driver's licenses. And it's the cashier's first day on the job. And she doesn't speak English.

Eternity is almost that long.

aahhh yessss of course, I didn't think about that one. Wonder how long it would take to reach absolute zero?

If protons decay, about 10^100 years. If not, about 10^10^76 years, assuming that the process of iron stars decaying into black holes or neutron stars gives off some tiny amount of heat, which seems a reasonable supposition.

All this, of course, is assuming the universe is open in fourspace (all four dimensions - length, width, height, and duration), and will continue expanding forever. If it's closed in fourspace, it will eventually collapse back in upon itself and form a new Universal Singularity, the time required being a function of the exact "shape" of the closure in fourspace.

I deliberately avoid thinking about it.

Just trying to get a grasp on the distances between planets in our own solar system does something to my brain....it's like having a seizure. Very disturbing. Utterly overwhelms me.
