I was just wondering, since it can be hard being different in my church. It's probably the same way in some other churches too. So if you are Mormon, or know someone who is, or just have something to say, please do post. And if you want to say something mean, I guess you can. I'm pretty used to hearing mean stuff about my religion by now.

I don't know if we have any active mormons here.

I thought there was at least one, who everyone used to pile on top of in gay rights discussions.

I was raised mormon. Haven't attended regular services since 1998. I think i've made it clear here that i consider myself to be an apatho-atheist.

And that i have no grudges against believers.

But asking your followers to spend time and treasure to curtail the rights of non-members is just wrong.

That's actually part of what makes me different in my church. I'm actually pro gay marriage, and I never understood what the church thought they were doing spending so much money to keep it illegal. I don't know if it has anything to do with being slightly autistic (having empathy for those who are different) or if it's just me. I'm just always looking for mormons like me. It can get kind of lonely.

They argue that they are worried that they could be compelled to perform gay marriages in the temple. I doubt that any constitutional lawyer would say that this is within the realm of possibility, though.

Back in the day the LDS church campaigned against the Equal Rights Amendment based on similar bullflop.

I think it's about old men in salt lake city being terrified that the world is changing around them.

That and hateful people reveling in a doctrinal excuse to be hateful.

I feel that you may be right. The strangest was when one of my LDS friends went towards atheism and was still very strongly against gay rights. I wanted to ask her why she still felt that way but I never got the courage to. If she really was an atheist she couldn't hold beliefs that it was against God's will, since she didn't believe in God, and I couldn't think of anything else that would make someone want to repress other humans. But the temple thing makes sense. But I also think that the government would never make someone perform a marriage against their will.

There are all kinds out there. I dated (well, she will say that we dated, I would say that she's someone i used to hang out with within a group of friends) a mormon girl once who was ok with people being full-on gay or lesbian but hated bisexuals and said they should just make up their minds.

It also turns out that ethics and morality don't have to come from religion. They are just usually dictated by religion. Maybe your friend is just really closed-minded.

I don't need a carrot and stick to decide to be a decent human being. I suppose some people have a different definition of decent though.

I'm an Active Latter-Day Saint... I'm in the UK (but I'm from Australia) and I think that it's part of my Asperger's that I really like the routines and boundaries. I'd feel really lost without the Church and it is because, I spend half my life with LDS people and most of my friends are LDS.

If i were still active, i'd feel very torn between who i know i am and who they want me to be.

But i put a lot of time and effort into figuring out who i am.

And I'm still working on it.

I'm an ex Mormon. I was born into the church. I hated the church since I was 7 years old. I just knew it was not right for me. I'm now an atheist.

I am an active member of the church. Like joeyfarlz. I would be lost without the routines and boundaries Heavenly Father has put in place in the church.

I'm currently an active mormon, but I think I'm on the path of turning into a liberal hippie Christian.
