Why would we want to vote for the idea of a referendum on ALL major issues?

Depends what your idea of 'major issues' is. I suspect that UKIP are referring to constitutional-size issues and major conflicts, for example.

If I were in power I'd call a referendum not only on leaving the EU but also a referendum in all four parts of the Union on retaining the UK.

Northern Ireland would vote to retain the Union, no question. Scotland probably would too - I think it's unlikely they'd vote for independence. Wales doesn't even like devolution that much and the English really just want their own identity to be expressed and acknowledged.

UKIP are quite eager to hurry up the process of England's return to a mediocre power on the edge of European and global politics isn't it? I mean its an inevitable processes that will happen in this century anyway but crickey keep up the illusion were still some kind of great power not a spent force till then else the masses might get clued up and start abandoning the ship.

So, you're saying England would vote for independence?

From my point of view here in Scotland, as far as the media is concerned, and perhaps politically, the English already are expressing their own identity and very successfully. Although, perhaps more so under the name of UK.

In terms of patriotism and identity, I think both independence and unity are positive for all nations. However, personally I do feel the UK is rather centralised to England and the other countries are slightly alienated. But, this does not cause any hard feelings against other nations. Infact, it's pretty much inevitable considering the differences in population between the countries of UK.

No, I'm saying that as by far the largest country of the Union that England would also vote to keep the Union. They just want their English (rather than British) national identity recognised. So no calling people racists for celebrating their Englishness (or, indeed, Britishness) and so on.

If the voting age was lowered would a lot of 16 and 17 year-olds really vote? Then again I suppose people who do have the right to vote often don't...

I don't remember hearing about any open border policies. And I think you mean he will vastly improve our wealth from good strong relations with EU.

I'm sorry, but how?
his main selling point for improving scotlands economy was the north sea oil rig. at the moment, scottish workers extract the oil and collect the money. then all that money goes down to london, where they take a huge cut of it and give us less than 30% back for our own economy. Under his proposistions, he claimed we would have enough money to build up the economy until the oil ran out. thing is, it's running out fast.
Plus, we also receive cuts from all other oil rigs, most doing better than the north sea oil rig.
He preys on peoples patriotism and centuaries old hatred of the english to try and make you see a dreamworld, where scots and only scots help our community. The reality is, we have in our entire country, less than half of the population in london.
Think about it.

That's the point in independence for Scotland. None of the other parties want a fair deal for Scotland. Also, SNP will fight to scrap the renewal of trident.

That's quite a popular tactic people have, particularly in England, which is to paint a picture of the SNP as anti England. Quite the opposite. This isn't Spain; we're not blowing up innocent people for independence, we're campaigning for a referendum on the matter.

And a small population doesn't mean a poor country. There's other European countries far smaller who can manage on their own.

Scotland hasn;t really got much to complain about, also comparing yourself in the same sentence to etna is extradionary

Highest rate of youth unemployment in UK, largest problem with alcohol and now obesity. We have to take the nuclear submarines that nobody wants. We are heavily charged for providing electricity to the national grid and with the potential for renewable energy, it's severely badly affecting the chance at an industry and economy boost. We are one of the main exporters of oil in the EU and yet pay far higher price for fuel than other countries in the EU that export NO oil. Those are a few issues to get started on.

It's not about getting one over on England and trying to "escape" the problems of UK. As demonstrated with the Scottish Parliament and Welsh Assembly, issues are different in different countries and people have different attitudes and opinions in different countries. Society and politics has changed and it's now a viable options for these countries to run themselves again.

And, I was merely suggesting an extreme view somebody could have about the SNP to make a point.

We have reached the point where all three main parties are basically the same. They are all liberal internationalists. They are all in the pockets of big business and ethnic lobbyists. They all support the pointless war in Afghanistan. None of them will do anything to repair the damage their predecessors have done to the nuclear family. None of them will do anything to improve dumbed down, politically correct education system. They're all perfectly in favour of the ongoing Third World colonisation of Britain and the prospect of of Britain's indigenous people becoming a despised minority within a couple of generations. And they all support the EU, which makes most of our laws anyway, and so makes domestic party politics rather redundant.

To see the media carry on as if the differences between these three parties are anything other than utterly trivial, and to see so many people actually believing it, is all a bit sad. The Liberal Democrats would quite possibly proceed to wreck the country at an even faster rate than Labour could manage, while the Tories would probably take it a bit slower. Apart from that, the only real differences between them are simply matters of branding and of who is likely to vote for them.

This election seems to have interested a lot of people at my school, actually, including people as young as 14. And they were properly considering parties' policies and forming informed opinions. I think young people are more interested in politics than some older people are aware.

Another observation I've made is that the Lib Dems are very popular with these youngest possible targets; in the mock election at the school the Lib Dems won. That's probably why the voting age will never be lowered.

If Labour form a coalition government with the Lib Dems, we could very well see it happening. However, I don't agree with the Lib Dems manifesto that says they want to lower the age for standing at election to 16 as well. Although I am sure there are some younger than 18 who would be mature enough, I think it is important to ensure those able to stand for election are of a mature age.
