The "White Terror" that happened years laterwards was also pretty bad, plus Jacobin rule ended by slauhgtering thousands of Paris's urban poor. So, in history, there really are few "good guys".


I think Extreme Leftism is just as dangerous as Extreme Rightism. "Cut all the blades of grass until they are all equal"- no thanks. I'm for equality but not the kind that a Marxist or Jacobin would espouse. Decapitate the old elite and replace them with a new elite? Not a solution

Oddly enough, Robespierre was a passionate opponent of the Death Penalty before The Terror (as well as a strident abolitionist and opponent of France's pre-emptive invasion of Austria). It's amazing what Revolutions do to people.
