In cases like NATO, USA is invited by the locals to be "everywhere".
Can't tell much about Pacific but I think Korea and Japan are also happy to have Marines ready to wipe North Korea out in case NK actually followed their threats.
Why even NK still exists? I heard China silently supports them to stay just above total collapse, so South Korea don't get too powerful. Maybe just a speculation, I don't remember where I read it.

The under-the-table geopolitics can be a really complex mosaic.

^hummm...I'm sure I've noticed China screaming about North Korea's nuclear weapons.
There is a shadow of Russia behind North Korea's nuclear weapons. This is one of the important nodes where China does not trust Russia.

But yes, China doesn't want South Korea's, or rather, the U.S., troops posted on its borders. But letting North Korea take over the entire Korean peninsula is even crazier.
It is better for China to maintain the status quo on the Korean peninsula (but preferably without nuclear weapons). I'm not very sure how much China has moved on this matter.

Cold War casts long shadows.
Well, it was long.

...meanwhile, in Gomel (Belarus), the first "forum of patriotic youth" is being held...

It's strange how patriotism is linked to love for the Soviet Union.
Lenin...Stalin...and no one else.

I am curious how Belarusians and Russians view Khrushchev.
Except that his giving Crimea to Ukraine is sure to be controversial in Russia. Much of his approach seems like the Soviet version of Deng Xiaoping.

The Belarussians who end up in Poland have drastically different views on what "being patriotic" means.
We're one of the major hubs for Belarussian pro-democracy activists, who often have to flee or get expelled from Lukashenka's state.

Belarus is a strange place. From outside, it looks like a living museum of Soviet Union. Inside, there's complex struggle between powers - democratic, pro-Russian, authoritarian independence seem to be the three major directions.

And a big, silent group that would like to just plant their potatoes in peace.

This smells totally China...

I’m probably in the “plant potatoes and leave me alone” group myself, though we can’t plant vegetables in our apartment complex.

:D

Well, I'm not. I'm a damned "let's make the world a better place" activist :/ At least I try to avoid causing damage in the process.

My "potatoes" often get neglected for it.

My greatest gardening achievement are the potted ferns that have not died.
Well, actually, after using some fertilizer they look nice.

/\I love ferns, I don’t have any indoor ones but would like to.There are some in the flower garden that come back every year.
Sometimes gardening is fun, not when it’s hot, or something has eaten the plants you worked so hard on.
Food prices are so high that now it’s matter of necessity.I have all sorts of greens right now, alpine strawberries and rhubarb. The wild mulberries will be ripe soon and I want to make some wine with them.

Sounds good - but my whole gardening space is limited to pots and boxes. Urban life. The only edible things I grow are peppermint and basil.

/\I saw where people had converted their apartment balconies into amazing small gardens. They utilized the walls with planters and even had grapes and all sorts of stuff. They have special pots that sit on the balcony rails and hanging baskets with strawberries.
Of course it all depends on if your balcony gets enough sun or if you have a balcony.
Lettuce and many greens are easy in pots.Peppers, eggplants and tomatoes also like pots.
Their are mini blueberries also.Tophat is a good small variety.
Sorry if I’m going on too much, I just love plants.

I have a balcony but no gardening talent, lol.

Growing food... well, local food security becomes clearly more and more important with every crisis. Contrary to apparent popular belief, people can live without toilet paper but not without food.
I wonder what a regular person can do to brace for impact of the inevitable global food crisis. Plant more staples, probably.

I received information that the official Ukrainian government Twitter posted a propaganda video about the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The video, which mentions the defeat of fascist and Nazi forces in 1945, is accompanied by pictures of Hitler, Mussolini and Emperor Hirohito.
Image
But the presence of Emperor Hirohito drew protests from Japanese Twitter users.
The Ukrainian government account subsequently fixed the "mistake".

If this is true. The Ukrainian government does not want any support from China.
The Chinese/Vietnamese representatives could be accused of having "Ukrainian blood on their hands" if they did not stand up while Zelensky was speaking. I think the same accusation, "Chinese blood is on their hands", is more appropriate here in reverse.
