Because it doesn't make for a fairy tale story like that of Adam and Eve. Allot of christians ( I have a family member that has gone a little too far) tend to look at the world in a naive, unrealistic way. I remember reading some Christian Right article by this mom who was so upset when her kids learned that the sun would eventually burn out in school. She even wrote angry letters to the school board saying that this undeniably true fact of science should never be taught. I believe she even went as far as to suggest that it should be removed from the textbooks! Needless to say, I don't think very highly of fundamentalist religious people.

I'm hoping by "Christian Scientists", you're not referring to members of the cult labeled "Christian Science".

So was this account written by god, and if so why did he lie, thereby causing so much confusion and angst. Or are you suggesting the far more sensible rationale that the bible is man made and an attempt to explain the known world with the tools and knowledge they had at their disposal.

I'm suggesting that it was not meant to be taken in a literal sense. The creation account of Genesis would be in error if it was meant to be taken literally, but it wouldnt be in error if it wasn't meant to be taken literally in the first place. I haven't really made up my mind on exactly how it should be taken, but I've read some interpretations that make sense to me.

That tends to be my line of thinking.

Make sense to you or, rather, appeal to you because of what you already believe.

I think it's quite likely that the Genesis story was originally meant to be taken literally, but even if it was to be taken as some allegory (the context doesn't seem to suggest that by the way), it would be quite a leap of faith to still refer to it as God's word.

I think it is likely that Christanity will find a way to come to terms with the science of evolution and make it a non issue for them. Christanity is and has been constantly evolving and I see no reason why it will not continue.
