Isn't the simpsons dark comedy? Like wouldn't that be the end of the conversation on stereotypes?

No because they took Apu out of the Simpsons. He's one of my favourite characters. Will they take Groundskeeper Willie out just because he's a Scottish stereotype? No. But an Indian person, yes.

Just looked up this story as I used to watch the show but haven't seen it in years now. It was just the voice actor for Apu said he personally felt no longer comfortable doing it. The creator of the show has confirmed that Apu is staying in The Simpsons.

Very good! you can always tell a first generation Brit domiciled in our shores by a love of scones/butter/lemon curd or the old favourite at Wimbeldon is jam/cream with scones

Hey, have I just found an offensive British stereotype?

No, but if you said the exact same thing about black people then you'd probably have gotten a warning from the mods about being racist.

Makes me wonder:
Do US Americans feel offended by the stereotype of them being fat, noisy and undereducated?

I'm just trying to find patterns... Poles get offended by stereotyping them as stupid or thieves but not so much with the stereotype of overtly devout Catholic drunkards.

In the early 70s everyone was malnourished and skinny.

Then around the late 1970s when I remember seeing overweight people trying to imitate Elvis wearing tight blue faded denim jeans with bell bottoms that looked like the buttons would pop any second.

The 80s fat people vanished again with the arrival of aerobics. It came back with a roar in the 90s with fast food becoming dirt cheap.

I'm an American and the fact that Americans are fat and only eat at fast food because they are too lazy to cook does not bother me one bit. I defy these stereotypes.

I have never heard of the other two stereotypes but I have heard of Americans being bad drivers. Hard for me to disagree when there are places in the US where people will honk their horns all the time at you for not stopping on the tracks or not going 0.1 second when the light turns green and everyone going 90 and tailgating your ass when the speed limit is 70. But bad drivers exist in every country, just look at Russia.

I am not aware of this stereotype. There was a Canadian show called Don't Drive Here, does this imply that Canadians are good drivers? Hard to tell with those ridiculous speed limits. I prefer Spain where they drive as fast as they bloody feel like.

Some American stereotypes irritate me, and I would be offended if somebody assumed I was a stereotypical American.

I’m not a great intellectual...but neither am I an ignorant clod.

When I go abroad, I make sure not to give off the impression that I’m an arrogant, loud tourist.

I am certainly a “do as the Romans do in Rome” type.

Build an empire the size of which the world has never seen before and have your ideas influence countries and societies the world over for centuries to come?

Yes I'm sure the Brits are still ruing the day Hengist and Horsa set foot on their shores 1500 years ago

Just pointing out the obvious lack of awareness in the original statement, given Britain had been occupied to varying degrees many times through history.

How the citizens of Britain today may or may not feel about those responsible for the invasions\occupations was never part of what was stated, nor what was addressed in the reply - even a very simple reading of the original statement and reply shows that - so I'm not sure what relevence your statement had to the discussion.

Since the thread topic has to do with what is "offensive," feelings are obviously relevant.

The point is that the invasions of Britain that you mentioned happened long enough ago that they are no longer a major sore point in relations between Britain and the rest of Europe.

I strongly suspect that when shlaifu said "Britain hasn't been occupied," he meant to say that Britain (or at least England) hasn't been occupied within recent historical memory.
