Are you familiar with how strictly censored Winnie the Pooh is and why?

I have some rambling comments to make on the topic of criticizing China. Not sure if anyone will read or try to understand.

First, I don't think there is any shortage of criticism of China in today's world. I am quite willing to criticize all sorts of things related to Chinese foreign policy, domestic policy, business practices, etc. None of this criticism would bring anything new to the conversation.

Now bear in mind I am American. For my entire life, America has always been the most heavily criticized country in the world. Not that America didn't deserve at least some of that criticism, but deserved or not, that is the case. This phenomenon was perhaps most intense during the Cold War, esp. in Europe, but never really went away. It occurred to me a few years ago that for once, America had a rival as a target of global criticism i.e. China. It's nice to see somebody else get some hate for once, but that doesn't make it a good thing. To me it seems hypocritical to revel in group hate towards another country as a change from always being the recipient of such hate. It would be better to strive for some understanding.

Let me also say the that policies for which China is most frequently criticized at present of more or less the same policies pursued by the US, Canada, and Australia towards aboriginal populations earlier in their history, except in a 21st Century context. And those countries never paid any real price for it. So even if we recognize Chinese policy as wrong, we don't really have the moral standing to point fingers. This is a matter for the world community. The US has no special responsibility to spearhead the "anti-Chinese struggle". The US has no special responsibility to lead the global campaign of outrage against China. And what is to be gained through outrage? Will this convince China to change its behavior and adopt "Western" policies towards its minorities, dissidents, etc? The US President, Biden, has accused China of genocide. So have many other Western leaders. At least they're clear on that point — maybe that's enough for now.

OTOH in the US today we have millions of people with some sort of ties to China; business, familial, educational, etc. If we declare a Cold War against China and China transitions from being a rival to being a enemy, all those people could now find themselves under suspicion as potential traitors. What good would that do? If we start boycotting China, it can only hurt our economy. How many Uighurs does that help?

I think the Congo is an absolutely retched place with hardly a white person in sight. I would be happy to criticize the Congo and its government all day, but what good would it do? There's a reason Western, white-dominated countries are criticized, and reasons China is criticized. I criticize my own country because that is the one country in which my opinion might make a difference.

Sounds like you're basically saying we should all tolerate China's genocide today just because our own countries committed genocide a long time ago. Oh and "It's all about the economy!"

That's the most BS excuse for defending China's genocide that I hear CCP apologists say all the time. I have to wonder if you would feel the same about the whole "Don't judge them!" attitude if it was you and your family being snatched off the streets and placed in concentration camps?

If you're willing to condemn your own society for genocide you should probably be willing to condemn other societies for engaging in similar or worse actions to what your own society did when it was committing genocide.

Exactly! I condemn what my own country has done and continues to do to minorities and POC all the time, but somehow I'm not now allowed to condemn another country for doing the same thing? This is why the world is so screwed up, because there's people who are always trying to silence those of us who speak out against oppression.

For what it's worth (at least online), some of the people who you might encounter making that argument are just trotting out a common canard the CCP and those ideologically aligned with them use to deflect criticism. It's not an honest rebuttal so you're perfectly in the right to call it out as a double-standard and to pin them from deflections if they try to insist that you'd defend your own nation's history in that regard.

Oh, this is something that predates the internet, the Stalin era USSR loved to point to the Jim Crow situation to deflect from their ongoing pogroms and purges, a practice that continued throughout the cold war and beyond. If you're feeling trollish, this is fun to point out to the Rachel Maddow liberals who see Putin's shadow everywhere when they go down this road, a nice little piece of jujitsu.

Yup, there's some interesting stuff in the various declassified and leaked Soviet files that became available at the end of the cold war about how they intentionally played up racial conflicts in the US through their various agents in the press, or later actually attempted to create and influence black militant groups in the US during the civil rights era, both to distract from their own misdeeds and to keep us occupied with an internal struggle. What's funnier is the private thoughts of many of these Soviet intelligence officers recorded in some of the materials, things to the effect of "why are the Americans putting up with this, why don't they just throw these people in camps like we do?" kind of stuff, or a collective "what's the big deal?" when Watergate happened, they couldn't believe we'd force a president out over such a bungling conspiracy as that.
