Usually if baby gets taken out in a c-section, they are attempting to save both lives. At that stage, the child can usually survive outside the womb with medical intervention.

A c-section is more dangerous to a woman than an abortion is, so it's a decision that the woman and her doctors have to make based on gestational age (how likely the fetus is to survive outside), the woman's condition (ie, is she stable enough to survive being cut open), and on how much she's willing to risk her life for the fetus. The vast, vast majority of women who are carrying a fetus into the 3rd trimester want the child, so it is often a very difficult decision for them to make.

They can also potentially induce the labor and get the child out that way, then take medical steps to make sure the child survives.

Even in cases of induced premature birth to protect the health of the mother, the preferred approach would be, I think, to induce labour and have an occpital-frontal vaginal delivery.

However, there are likely few circumstances in which induction of premature birth would be indicated but vaginal delivery not be contraindicated. Many premature infants are still in breech presentation, which increases the likelihood of resort to caesarean. If a woman's life is in danger, chances are that she will be in greater danger from labour than she will from surgery (though that might not always be the case).
