The inverse relationship between female education and birth rates has been known for decades, and is well-documented.

In the Philippines, the literacy rate is close to 100%

http://www.indexmundi.com/facts/philipp ... eracy-rate

This was one of the big pushes of the Americans during the occupation of the islands, from about 1898-1948.

And, okay, the fertility rate isn't quite what it used to be

http://www.census.gov.ph/content/despit ... theast-and

They seem to have fallen to about where we were during our Baby Boom years.

It must be linked to increased contraceptive use rather than education.

Still, there are people who go in for the huge families.

....There's a saying in the Philippines, "pantawid gutom." It means to "cross the hunger." When a family can't afford rice, they'll water down a pack of instant noodles or feed their babies brown sugar dissolved in water to ease the hunger pangs. The fact that this saying even exists should tell you something about what it means to be poor here. Clarissa Canayong is 42 years old. She has 10 surviving children -- the youngest only a year old. And she lives in an urban Manila slum called Vitas, at the edge of a garbage dump. Canayong's house, her food, all the money she earns -- around $7 a day on the good days -- comes from garbage. Her family picks through the trash heap to find things they can use or sell. She's lost four of her children to measles and dengue fever....

I suppose that our Libertarian brethren will be gratified that Mrs. Canayong isn't getting Welfare or Food Stamps.

Here is an American who lives in the Philippines, and his take on supporting parents

I suppose that as we get older, even in America, we start to think more-and-more that the elders should be treated with respect and decency.

In a patriarchal culture where 'marital rape' isn't a crime, and even if it was, the husband is culturally considered to have a right to his wife's body any time he wants, and she has to confess to a priest if she denies him?

I don't know about that, but here is a discussion about whether the poor having bigger families is a matter of choice or circumstance:

http://www.nscb.gov.ph/headlines/StatsS ... v_poor.asp

Quote:
...Many of us have friends who yearn to have apos. But not everyone is blessed with those little rascals and cutie pies to pamper. Some rich couples have waited so long, despite many trips to fertility specialists here and abroad. On the other hand, when one goes to slum areas in Metro Manila, one sees hordes of happy children playfully chasing each other, completely oblivious to the impoverished environment that encumbers their young minds.

As the powerful Catholic Church opposes nontraditional methods of contraception, population management in the Philippines has certainly been a big challenge....

... why do the poor have bigger families? Some possibilities: (1) The poor have no access to modern family planning methods. Should this be difficult for PopCom to address? (2) The poor need more children to do household chores or to help in economic activities of the family. Shouldn’t children be studying in school instead? (3)The poor are religiously guided by the Catholic Church. Does it mean that the rich do not really pray when they go to church? Susmaryosep! (4) The poor lead healthier lives. Try malunggay and ampalaya then. Also, drink plenty of water and leisurely take a healthy breakfast at home - not in the office nor in a fast food center! (5) The poor lead less stressful lives (read: the poor enjoy sex better). Workaholic couples probably find less quality time to enjoy themselves and so find it difficult to conceive. With a nagger of a biyenan to boot, how can the poor rich couples’ copulation techniques succeed? But recalling that nonrandomly selected women enjoy sex better than men, maybe, just maybe, poor men do it better than rich men? (6) The poor are less able to resist the pangangalabit ni waswit or pag-aklay ni maybahay. Because even the poorest women desire fewer children than they actually have! Or are the innocently seductive poses of the poor far more effective than branded perfume, sculpted noses and tattooed eyebrows? (7) In vitro fertilization is subprime compared to dancing in Obando. Note that we seldom see rich childless couples hying off to Bulacan. Pride prevails, maybe? The poor - they simply swing it all out when Willie wheedles, Sayaw Darling, Sayaw Darling!

Unfortunately, there are no official statistics to indicate definitively the reason why the poor are more successful in going forth to multiply! Whether they are forced by circumstances or whether theirs is an informed choice. ....

...Nonetheless, even as it has not been established beyond reasonable doubt which between poverty and family size is the cause and which is the effect, the strong correlation between the two variables is unmistakably clear. Statistics also very convincingly point to the importance of education in addressing poverty reduction and population management. This should be more than enough information to inform our decisions.

Maybe, as a US politician says, our time for change has come! PopCom, instead of spending on condoms should probably spend a big part of its budget to promote reading as a hobby, don’t you agree?....

In the USA, there is little incentive to have a large family, or even any kids at all, as the kids will probably leave when they grow up and never give you a dime. In the Philippines: as soon as they start working, you have an income. If you have a lot of kids, then you stand a reasonable chance of one or two of them being successful enough to raise your living standard. Or, even if you have 12 offspring who work in low-wage jobs, at least that is better than only having 2 in low wage jobs. Richer folks would have fewer children, and invest more in each individual child's future.

Then why not marry a woman who already has a brood of young ones? You can start reaping the rewards now.

Well, that might work. Not a bad plan. Especially if at least some of them are already working, or married well.

LOL! I love it. That's the cutest thing I've ever seen about the Western man/Asian woman thing.

Some interesting survey results from Thailand:

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/2009/05 ... 103341.php

Quote:
More than three-fifths of women in the Northeast surveyed in an Isaan poll said they wanted to marry farang husbands, mainly because of their wealth, faithfulness and respect for women.

Of 484 women living in 19 northeastern provinces surveyed in March and April, 61 per cent said they deemed Western men rich, 53 per cent said they thought farang men were kind and respected women more than Thai men, while 16 per cent said they wanted to marry and live abroad.

Englishmen were the favourites, gaining 32 per cent of respondents' votes, while Americans and Germans trailed behind with 21 and eight per cent respectively.

We certainly seem to have some excellent odds over there.

http://bangkok.coconuts.co/random/mp-ur ... asier-life

Quote:
MP urges Thai women: Marry a farang for an easier life

A Thai MP has gotten into hot water over his controversial suggestion for poor Thai women who want an easy life: "find a farang husband."

..Sunai tells the audience of around 1,000 red shirts to find a farang husband for an easy life “because European governments give you everything for free.”

Sunai went on: “Get a German husband. Get a Swedish husband. Get a Norwegian husband. People used to love [Thailand] unreservedly. But the more they loved the country, the poorer they got. The more they loved the country, the stupider they got.”

“All you need is a farang husband and their government will pay you to study,” he said.

Even more controversially, he then implied that the best way to study a foreign language was by sleeping with a foreigner.

It looks like Thais think highly of Europe and European husbands. Americans maybe not so much, due to our lack of social services. Although, hey, any ladies want some American English lessons?

Maybe we socialists can use this as a lever to get the rich, old, white guys on the side of more social services: "Want an attractive Asian wife? Improve the safety net!"
