University lecturers told DON'T USE CAPS as it frightens students

UNIVERSITY lecturers have been told not to use words in capital letters when setting assignments because it might frighten students into failure.

Staff at Leeds Trinity's school of journalism have also been told to "write in a helpful, warm tone, avoiding officious language and negative instructions". Some blasted the move as "more academic mollycoddling" of the snowflake generation. An "enhancing student understanding, engagement and achievement" memo lists dos and don'ts - with "do" and "don't" among words frowned upon.

Course leaders say capitalising a word could emphasise "the difficulty or high-stakes nature of the task".

The memo says: "Despite our best attempts to explain assessment tasks, any lack of clarity can generate anxiety and even discourage students from attempting the assessment at all.

Generally, avoid using capital letters for emphasis and "the overuse of 'do', and, especially, 'DON'T'."

Vegan activists launch campaign to give town of Wool a more sheep-friendly name

Quote:
An animal rights group has asked an English village to change its name to help promote veganism and fight cruelty.

Activists from PETA sent a letter to the local authorities in Wool requesting they rename their town Vegan Wool. In the letter, PETA argued that the name change will "put Wool in the spotlight and promote kindness to sheep."

The move follows the release of two PETA Asia investigations that the organization said uncovered cruelty to sheep in the British wool industry

PETA, whose motto is "animals are not ours to wear," has offered to provide every household in Wool with a vegan-friendly blanket if they agree to the change.

But town leaders say PETA has it wrong.

"If they look into the history of Wool, they will see that the village has nothing to do with the wool industry," a spokesperson from Wool Parish Council told the Dorset Echo newspaper. "I can’t see the village changing its name now. We are going to look into it and it will be discussed at the Parish Council meeting on December 17."

The Dorset County Council said it was not in favor of changing place names.

"As a county, we are immensely proud of our heritage and the diverse history of our often unique place names, which have been in place since Saxon times," a spokesperson for the council told ABC News.

So far, the campaign has garnered a mixed response on social media. Some have praised the publicity campaign, arguing that anything that gets people talking about animal cruelty is a good thing. Others, meanwhile, have suggested the request would alienate ordinary people.

Wool, Dorset
Quote:
The place-name 'Wool' is first attested in Anglo-Saxon Writs from 1002 to 1012, where it appears as Wyllon. In the Domesday Book of 1086 it appears as Wille and Welle, and as Welles in 1212 in the Book of Fees. The name means 'springs' in the sense of the related word wells.

Ivy League Students Kick SNL Comedian Nimesh Patel Off Stage

Columbia University students invited Saturday Night Live comedian Nimesh Patel to perform on campus this weekend, then cut his mic and kicked him off stage after he allegedly made “rude” and “offensive” jokes.

The debacle happened Saturday night at cultureSHOCK, an event dedicated to celebrating Asian and Pacific Islander culture. Having attended it twice during my time at Columbia, I know that the catered show typically begins with a fashion show and culminates with a comedy skit.

Last year, cultureSHOCK ended with a standing ovation for Phil Kaye, a Japanese-American poet whose work is mainly personal, not political. But this year, cultureShock organizers chose Emmy-nominated Nimesh Patel, the first Indian-American to write for SNL.

The event quickly spiraled out of control.

Patel allegedly made numerous "offensive” jokes, including about how being a gay black man isn’t a choice since “no one looks in the mirror and thinks, ‘this black thing is too easy, let me just add another thing to it.'”

The crowd of roughly 100 students didn’t seem fazed. Three students reported to PJ Media by phone that there was no booing or shouting, but mostly silence as Patel’s racially and ethnically themed jokes fell on politically correct ears.

Halfway through his skit, organizers jumped on stage, stole the mic, denounced Patel’s jokes, and asked him to wrap up his set. Patel pushed back, and said he was exposing students to ideas that could be found “in the real world.”

Students then cut his mic and kicked him off stage.

Quote:
Another Barnard student, Sofia Jao, told The Columbia Spectator she takes offense at Patel’s insinuation that comedy is acceptable “in the real world.”

“When older generations say you need to stop being so sensitive, it’s like undermining what our generation is trying to do in accepting others and making it safer,” said Jao.

“Obviously the world is not a safe space but just accepting that it’s not and continuing to perpetuate the un-safeness of it… is saying that it can’t be changed,” she added.

Caveats: I obviously was not at or and Jao's comments as printed might be misleading. The first sentence seems just badly written.
I am not saying stop being so sensitive in order to accept offense, I am saying stop being so sensitive so
1. You do not take offense when none was given
2. When the offense was given you do not let the bad person win by destroying you mentally.

Jao, who appointed you a spokesperson for your generation?

Forcefully taking someone's mike away is not in anyway acceptance.

It took me a while but I think I got it, apparently the what was soo offensive was a non-black comedian making a joke involving a black character, appropriation. The comedian through humor was saying that being black leads to all sorts of societal disadvantages and being gay like being black is not a choice that puts you in at a societal disadvantages. They are students at elite colleges and yet they can't recognize the comedian is on their side.

If I give in to this politically correct language does that mean I am chicken?

Furor over Nazi symbols in 'Sound of Music' play at NYC's elite 'Fame' performing arts high school

The hills are alive … with the sound of political correctness.

Nazi props were temporarily declared verboten in LaGuardia High School’s production of the Third Reich-set classic “The Sound of Music” prior to the show’s Thursday night opening.

The principal at the elite “Fame” school, Lisa Mars, ordered Nazi flags and symbols removed from the stage set of the beloved tale of the Von Trapp family, who fled the Nazis from their native Austria as Adolf Hitler took power, students told the Daily News.
