 You and your so whats...get me every time. I am not certain the change in our society's acceptance of sexual immagery is a statement that sex and bodily functions are the primary motivation in human thoughts and behavior. But what do I know? I imagine Freud's opinions would be found as more interesting than mine by most, and I will admit my distaste for some of his concepts make me a bit biased.

I once had an art teacher who really liked me and was quite frustrated to learn of my difficulty in creating visual abstractions. I just made up some stupid crap to make her happy and was furious when it won first place in the school art show. A friend of my mother later interpreted that peice as phallic because it contained a disembodied mouth and a tube of lipstick. I told her, I guess some people see penises everywhere.

:D

Hey, don't run yourself down. I see at least one penis every time I go to bed( unless I'm very tired and my eyes don't coordinate and I might see several) but I think that's not quite what Freud had in mind. It's mostly secondary sexual attributes like a nice pair of breasts or a well shaped behind that are accented in popular literature and ads. The actual organs are shunned as being too explicit although the film "Bruno" has no holdups on the matter.

Nevertheless male macho as a basic expression of power is not exclusively a modern concept. Extended forms have always had male significance and rounded soft shapes are as frequently interpreted as female. Freud didn't invent this, he merely noticed it.

Well, I have not read Freud since my early twenties and although I did not find his writings to be total garbage, I did find some things which made me question his own stability not to mention his views of women in general. I happen to be going to the library shortly. Perhaps Freud may deserve a second chance.

Maybe you could look for a precise biography. One which doesn't hide too much. It explains a lot of his work and how and why he saw the world the way he did.

I never read Freud but, Freud, like sex, can be inhaled with the breeze. I learned most of my Freud from New Yorker cartoons and it not only was funny, it made sense.

I guess you'd have to be somewhat obsessed with sex or genitals to see the phallacy behind this sort of psychology......>

Yes it sounds very longic.

Even behind every myth there seems to be a sexual explanation.

I did happen to see one of the sort, but the author had an obvious bias against Freud, stating he hid facts about his own life and upbringing to paint himself in a better light. I only read the synopsis, but it seemed the author's intent was clear. I figured I did not want to read about Freud's mother. There were a few others, but alas, the criminology section won me over again. Freud never stood a chance. Maybe next time.

You would read more about Freud's father and why he deleted a lot of his previous writings.

That's probably a good idea.

She instilled the Oedipal phase of his sexuality afterall....

Makes me think about that song Kids with Guns... and then i noticed the lyrics still make perfect sense if you switch "with guns" with " and sex", disturbing? <.< :P

Yes, guns are also part of everything, as are puppies, daises, god/religion, politics, philosophy... sex, and Freud's opinion on it!

So your correct, in the big picture, everything (since sex is in everything by your opinion) is not obsolete. 8)

I have no idea why you felt that needed pointing out.

I'd take sex any day over guns and I think many people would agree.

Maybe to disarm the population, there should be a coitus/gun exchange program?

My original observation had nothing to do with what you might prefer, it had to do with the basic psychology of power.
