Should the Republican Party simply declare it's a religion?

Actually, Catholics are more Democrat than Republican. In fact, the Christians that tend towards the Republican party most strongly are Mormons and Evangelicals. Others tend to be split much more evenly or lean towards Democrat.

The reason why Protestants tend to get voted into office most of the time (there has only ever been ONE Catholic president) is because that's what we've come from. Many of your moral beliefs come from a Christian ideal, because we are a Christian nation. Even many atheists identify with Christian moral beliefs and governmental customs. Atheists may rebel against the idea of a god, but the morals that they were raised with tend to stick.

As an example, many atheists believe that helping others who are having a hard time in their life is a good thing. This is not a universally held belief. It is a Christian belief. Monogamy is another Christian belief (not shared in early Mormonism due to practical issues) that is not shared by those of other cultures. And yet, atheists would be appalled if you suggested that you have more than one wife (or husband, depending on the belief).
