In the mid 20th century - man becomes civilized, finally. :P

Through the development of the atomic bomb and the Holocaust, I assume.

The question was when did we become civilized. I don't know that I equate peaceful to civilized. I believe that they are two different concepts. In fact, brutality is independent of civilization, and with the advent of civilization, we gained the ability to apply that brutality in wider and broader proportions than we could when we were pre-civilized.

War is an effect and/or property of civilization. And I do not really believe that civilization can survive without it. The face of war may change, but it will always be around as long as civilization is. If we eradicate war, then either we will fight our wars elsewhere, (likely with ideas via the internet or what evolves out of the internet... or maybe in space against the alien invaders) or civilization will stagnate and die off, just as anything which is not adaptive is destined to do. War in many ways plays the role to the evolution of civilization that natural selection does to genetic evolution.... Actually i think that it is more accurate to say that war IS a natural selection process.

War is an attempt to resolve social problems with brutality and ignorant dominance. It is the method of non-thinking savagery and it rewards the worst elements of society. It is the mark of a successful society to preserve and conserve it's best resources. War is a total waste of human and material resources and is a prime indication of ignorance and stupidity, the basic elements which destroy civilization.

Agreed. But necessary nonetheless.
That is why I advocate what I called changing the face of war, into something totally different. Let war be about ideas, fought in intellectual battlefields, not killing fields. Let it be weak ideas that are killed, not weak humans. Let it be our breath that is expended, not precious limited natural resources.

That war is already on, Sand, and we both fight on the same side, at least in one issue....

War is a filthy word. I prefer some other designation.

War = combat in some contexts. War = struggle in other contexts. Face it; war is a common inclination to many sub portions of the human race. We are a warlike species. In that regard we resemble our ancestral cousins, the Chimps. * It would be better if we took after our other ancestral cousins, the Bonobos.

ruveyn

* and shame on us! We know better.

Not in the least being warlike, then, must I consider myself a different species? It might be possible for me to mate with a warlike human female to discover if this is true. I am willing to subject myself to the experiment.

Civilization came with specialization.

In the stone age we were all hunter-gatherer warriors.

With agriculture came cities and specialization.
I am a farmer.
I am a stone mason.
I am a blacksmith.
I am a weaver etc etc.
