The problem is that there *isn't* a healthy population. The Japanese aren't just going after the little minke and sei whales; they want to be able to kill everything that swims. The larger whales still have not recovered to pre-industrial whaling population levels, and now they are threatened b/c humans are competing with them for food (krill and smaller fishes) and poisoning the oceans in ways that kill off their food (herring in Alaska after the Valdeze spill, for example, still have not recovered).

That isn't just a problem with whales. David Suzuki warned the Canadians for decades that they were overfishing Salmon.

But there were votes involved and compensation for fishermen if you reduced their catch. So now they are in big trouble.

It's not just whales and salmon. Continuing to fish for Atlantic bluefin tuna is on the verge of driving the species extinct, but every single adult tuna is worth thousands of dollars. Swordfish, the same.

They're going to have to stop killing them *sometime,* why not stop while there are still enough left to build back the population?

Pretty much anything the Japanese do to get seafood is destructive, but that being said, I don't think that Greenpeace or the Sea Shepherds are going to put a stop to it. That will require economic sanctions.

I'm all for sustainable aquaculture, and restrictions on whaling based on sustainability (note: restrictions are not the same as prohibitions).

The subject that truly gets up my nose is the opposition to the seal hunt.

I NEVER said that I support Americans who harass whalers, I said the Japanese NEED to move on. If you don't like that, too effing bad for you, that's not my problem.

You sound like you're one of those American haters who will attack an American they feel they can dominate and blame them for what you think other Americans are doing wrong, like I can do anything about it.

Do you realize how ridicules that is? Maybe next time you should stop and read what was actually written and stop and think about what you are writing before you write something ret*d like that again and embarass yourself.

And rule fantasy football with him.

/Seriously, you can't hold that against a guy for life. He should be able to get on with his life. It's just a shame that the PETA freaks can't get on with their lives and have to stick their noses in everything.

Screw 'save the whales', I say 'save the Americans' because we're committing suicide between bad economic policy and the various nation building abroad and the newly brewing trade war with China. Obsession over animal welfare is a luxury cause.

I suggest we promote cannibalism.

The parts of the world that are overpopulated can eat each other until the population is stable.

Otherwise you can't stop it. People need to eat and they will eat anything they can.

In Africa it will go on until the last people cut down the last tree to barbecue the last tiger.

If killing a dog with my bare hands would save a human life, I'd do it without hesitation.

We could eat aborted fetuses, it's more ethical.

I don't.
