But it doesn't control the minds of arabs with gamma rays. The people on the streets are independent actors.

Gawd..... let me guess..... "Twitter is an american invention to control the arab minds and make them do what America wants"
Ridiculous.
Twitter , facebook or anything of their kinds are just platforms of communication , the anonymous arab users are saying their minds there , there's no some hidden evil energy that are making them to do so.
When I think about it, those conspiracy theorists really insult the arab people with their theories and portray them as nothing more than mindless zombies who are controlled by some external empirical force. And man .....their selectiveness and their favorism of one dictator over another and one popular revolution over another is really sickening. To them , only the pro-US dictators are bad while the anti-US dictators (who are often pro-Iran) are winged angels.

Not at all. No such conspiracy. It's just an effective means to help spur revolution against troublesome leaders and give the people the illusion that they're actually doing something for themselves. It's certainly more effective than Bush's approach. However, Egypt still won't be free of US control nor will most other countries in the region.
I don't think anti-US dictators are any better. But I am realistic about the opportunistic nature of our intelligence agencies and their eagerness and effectiveness with psy-ops.

Are you serious? We no longer have the chops to do it nor the cash. To occupy the Middle East would require the total mobilization of our economy for war. There is no way the will fly politically.
We can't even fight two mini-wars well.

So the people ripping down posters of Assad in BOO'S latest video are in fact an illusion created by western psy-ops? There is a difference between living in a country like Syria and a country like the UK or the USA. Our freedoms may seem illusory at times but dictatorial regimes operate like medieval kingdom's complete with torture chambers. They are absolutist and autocratic. Arab's are literally dying in the streets to gain the freedoms that we deride as illusory.

Again, not what I meant. What I meant was putting in one or two of the right kind of push that takes people from living in oppression to opposing oppression. And it's mostly a hypothesis but I wouldn't be surprised if the regime changes benefit the US empire while leaving the people who fought for revolution in roughly about the same position they were in before. All it takes is the right kind of push...that one person in the crowd who actually throws a bottle, you know?

Revolutions are hard to control once they're set in motion. The new elected Egyptian regime will certainly be more responsive to it's people than Mubarak's was. The space to challenge it's decisions and elect it's leaders will exist in a way that it didn't before, as it does in our countries. Indeed i think we should make more use of our own freedoms but i think we're just too comfortable to do so.

Really? How much territory outside the 50 states does the U.S. actually rule?
The British were much more imperialistic than the Americans ever were.
The U.S. never had a Raj.

It has military bases in over a hundred countries. It's political control is waning but still strong. Look at its client dictators in the middle east. It also funds regimes and dictators it likes direct from the US public purse. Not really an empire in the classic sense but it has effective control over territory. More so in the 20th century but still existing to this day.
