Ooooooh, I am so jealous. Like Master_Pendant, I cannot have gluten... but seeing things like that makes me WANT to eat it anyway.... :(

Hold on--I am hearing criticism of poutine from people who put gravy on their mashed potatoes? And what nation gave us the notion of hash browns "covered and smothered?"

Note for purists, poutine should never be made with beef or pork gravy, but always with lighter sauce brun from meats like chicken, veal or turkey. The correct choice of cheese is absolutely essential to the best poutine. It must (must!!) be cheese curd and the curds must be fresh. Curds lose their distinctive "squeak" after about a day. Thus the only places that you can get the genuine article are dairy producing areas like Québec, New England and the midwest.

Gravy and potatoes has a long and well respected history among gourmands. The fact that the potatoes are in fried rather than mashed form is irrelevant! Cast your eye throughout the fry eating world and you will find an astonishing number of ways of dressing the creatures up.

(Oh, and gluten free poutine is easy--you just have to make your own gravy using arrowroot or cornstarch instead of flour.)

Also, if you happen to go near Montréal, it has been said that "La Banquise" sells quite a variety of poutines. :>

Also, i had heard that joke about american culture, french government and british know-how before, i just couldn't remembered how it went... =/

Oh yeah! I almost forgot, if any of you are potato lovers, the rumor has it that Prince Edward's island produce the best ones. :> I think i've only tried them once when i was a wee children so i can't quite remember, but it tasted pretty good. :o (sorry if i'm hyping it up for no reason ^^; )

LOL, I know how to make gluten free gravy. ;)

The issue is it's not "easy". You're visiting Montreal on a trip and you want to grab a poutine - oh, no, you can't! Because the fries likely aren't gluten free (fried in the same oil as battered food) and most certainly the gravy isn't.

So you're stuck only eating food like that at home, and you have to prepare everything. Unless you can find a restaurant that serves gluten free food - and trust me, having had the "real" things before I found out I can't have gluten, I get mighty disappointed with the gluten free abominations.

How I long for fast food... sad, but true. All of you who can eat gluten - you don't know how lucky you are!

I don't even eat poutine that much... I think i've only had it once in my life so far. =.= When i was a wee lad. I was stuffed afterwards due to my slow metabolism. I might be able to digest it faster nowadays. <.<

I wish the Queen of England stopped dissolving the Canadian Parliament. Obviously if they held a no confidence vote and it passed AGAIN for Stephen Harper, that she should stop sticking her nose in Canada's business. This is the 3rd time in 3 years she's dissolved Canada's Parliament.. and to think , most people only thought her role was ceremonial and she had no real power over England and the colony's.

Then why don't you leave the commonwealth? It's worked great for us.

I don't live in Canada, but I've seen so many Canadians come to America for healthcare that I'd never want to live there. I see Canada as a country that should govern on it's own and not by proxy from the English Government and off-shore banksters.

My apologies. You're right. The "Governor-General" representative of the Queen. lol. But yeah, Canada has freedoms and the people are generally more happy then most people in the world .. the country isn't bad really, but it could always be better like any country.

Harpoutined topic

Sadly, our GG is no longer Michaelle Jean. Now we have someone by the name of Johnston, who will not upstage Steve, as he is even less photogenic.

Our RMR Rick Mercer is a national iconoclastier, and his insights are brilliant. :D

And now we are in the midst (mist?) of an election, on the way to another minority or a very slim majority. I still worry about a coalition, though not for the reasons that Steve Harpooned has opined, and in the convolutions of his mind I have a sneaky suspicion that our bespectacled piano player (not to be confused with Bob Rae :P ) has not ruled one out for his own use, either.
