The WTO has no more power than is given to it by the signitories to GATT. It is not a government.

No nation is compelled to joint although there are advantages to being a member.

Nice to know.

When the ethical objections are dumb. Yes.

Dolphins are not holier than Tuna.

Dolphins and other Ceteceans are intelligent and might be people. I am not overjoyed at the idea of eating the flesh of people or killing people to get my protein.

Yeah, I'm with Ruveyn on this one. Dolphins are some of the smartest organisms on the planet, possibly on a par with chimpanzees and elephants. They have been known to use tools, and pass the self-awareness mirror test as well. They care for their sick and injured as much as they can without limbs or home-bases. Tuna do none of these things.

All of which is beside the point; in free markets, the best power of the consumer is to vote with their dollar. There are far too many brands of far too many products for any consumer to research, so labeling that has a significant meaning is the only thing allowing consumers to make informed choices about what they buy. This ruling by the WTO essentially says that consumers should be deliberately kept ignorant of the practices behind their tuna.

Dolphin Free/Friendly? topic

And all this time I thought the dolphins were NOT trapped with the tuna. In Canada our tuna cans are labeled Dolphin Friendly, not Free of Dolphins. False labeling?
