If the student refuses to pay attention, that's his problem. Blaming it on the teacher is quite frankly ridiculous. The teachers job is to teach, NOT to make sure every single student does every single thing to the best of their ability.

The teacher not taking disciplinary action for a student that is making it hard for other students to learn is at fault for doing nothing about it.

If they're being distracting, kick 'em out. They don't want to learn, they shouldn't be forced. They'll come back crying when their 20 and can't get a job.

You see this is what I have a problem with if their not wanting to learn in a normal school send them to a military school where they have no choice but to learn.

Why do you have this right to decide and not them (or their parents)? What makes you so special?

I am only speaking for myself if my children didn't want to learn and just be a bad student I would seen them to a military school not wanting to learn and prosper is very illogical.

because to be honest to most people that would only backfire,

people dont do what they dont want to and when you force them bad things happen, that is why bad things happen.
that is why there is no single good or bad answer when it comes to education and why you might very well have enjoyed or at least respected a militray school while for others it would bring nothing but trouble.
from mild drug use to try to get out to a full blown psychological complex, something that could last for life.

on my school we were specifically told that as long as we respected the safety of ourselves and our fellow students and showed respect anything goes.
there were no hard set rules, there were certainly shared responsibilities, we had to clean the entire school ourselves, or the economy of the school would suffer and we would have less money for field trips or similar activities.

reaching responsibility can come in many ways but as with everything else people only learn when they are willing, putting a child on the defensive is not the way to make them want to learn, and that is whats important, still my biggest virtue today, my thirst for knowledge.

Depends on what they want to do. If they want to do physical work, they don't need to know calculus.

True but like a wise man once said with out a education your not going anywhere in life. Knowledge is something to strive for not wanting to learn is very illogical.

people aren't logical. And like I said, it depends on what you want to do. If you want to work construction, where is the logic in learning rocket science instead of carpentry or masonry?

So they would just rather have people do their taxes help manage their money help them spend their money wisley when they live on their own instead of being a independent person. Math is in everything you do in life.

You can say I am being harsh but with out a education your not going to get a very good job instead you will just end up flipping burgers and if thats the only job you can get and you have a family to take care of then I am sorry you will most likely end up living on the streets.

wants and needs are not neccesarily bound to anything we recognize as logic.

True but you need to learn things simple things like how to write a check do your taxes ect. Not wanting to learn simple things like that will have dire consequences if you plan on having a family how will you provide for them by just flipping burgers.

A education is something that everyone should want to have even animals teach their young how to hunt for food and take care of themselfs so they want have to depend on their parents to do it for them.

Holding teachers accountable for student performance motivates teachers to cheat as a result you get less students actually learning anything.

That's their choice. Not yours. You can't make choices for other people no matter how much you wish you could.

Still if you work construction you have to know how to read the blue prints you can't hire a employee who can not read and put him on a team he will not know how things work more then likely he will get hurt on the job.

I think one way to fix this problem is paying teachers on their work performance it would motivate the teachers to teach. I heard in one state they give the students like 20 or 25 dollars to make good grades that is good in theory but economically will not work in every state.

When you get pulled over by the police you have no choice but to pull over when they tell you to when you don't you get fined and do jail time. So with that being said you can make chioces for other people.

Because they made a choice to break the law, those are the consequences.

No why don't you go walk in to a store and tell the people you just bought it for a dollar. Obviously because you can make choices for other people, you've done so.

Shift the focus on K-12 education away from rote learning and "teaching to the test" and then we'll talk.
