The western nations should learn not to depend on Middle East oil and gas. Then they could let the Middle East nations perish in their backwardness and stupidity.

On the contrary, I think Middle East nations would thrive without western interference. As we speak, Western and Russian oil companies are looting the Libyan oil reserves like vultures, leaving ordinary Libyans with a dry wartorn dustbowl. Exactly what has happened in Iraq.
One of the reasons it is a shame that Gadaffi is gone, is because he was spearheading the movement to create a federal African Union, so that Africa could rely on itself and reclaim its own supply of natural wealth for itself. In my view, that represented Africa's last and real hope to acheive development. No that no one is leading this movement, I do not see a clear cohesive means for Africa to become autonomous and self sufficient.
Getting rid of our oil dependence would produce interesting long-term results. They wouldn't be able to pressure us that much in exchange for oil, and they would hardly make any money. The wealthier countries in the Middle East would suddenly run out of the bulk of their income. That would probably be good for the rest of the world - in the Netherlands, their oil wealth has visibly produced mosques funded by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, and under-the-radar funding to extremists. Not as interesting as Gaddafi, though, who had large amounts of money stored in bank accounts all over Europe.
