There's occasionally hints of stuff like this in the UK - some have tried to import it from the US - but to see it so mainstream is something else.

What's up here? Who are the 'elite' they're talking about? Who do they think is 'smart'? How much is sincere in those labels, and how much mocking/derisive? I assume it's some attempt at invoking (perceived) class distinctions without actually doing so.

I've read my Thomas Frank, but if any USer would care to explain, I'd be grateful.

Well Vexcalibur, seems more like you can't get it through your head that Rick Santorum was using some sarcasm and basically saying liberals aren't as intelligent as they think they are, which he would be correct.

I've seen this video posted all over the web and you're the first one to suggest he's being sarcastic. I rewatched it and there's nothing in his voice to suggest he's being sarcastic. There's no inflection of the voice, he didn't change his tone, he put no extra emphasis on any words, nothing. No one laughed afterward either. If he was being sarcastic, they would have laughed.

He was being very serious.

He wasn't intending to be funny, fact of the matter is that he included "elite" in his speech, essentially he was calling liberals a bunch of elitist snobs, and many liberals that I have met are snobs.

So he wasn't being sarcastic? Make up your mind.

He was being very sincere. He often takes this stance in his speeches.

To get an idea of Santorum, he's a Roman Catholic who disagrees with the Catholic Church on nearly everything besides the existence of God. He's very fundamentalist and as a result, he has prejudices against higher education. (Here's) an article from Forbes discussing it (before Inuyasha comes to say Forbes has a "left wing bias". The editor-in-chief is Steve Forbes (link), a Republican).

He considers people attending universities and those with degrees ("smart" folk) as "elitist" and "snobs", because they tend to disagree with him. Ironically, he used to be lawyer. So he has a few degrees himself.

That would render him an elite snob.

He was being sarcastic, but it's no surprise that he's anti-intellectual.

Wow. And presumably his opponents have to try and engage with him in some sort of polite manner? Poor them, and poor anyone he's representing.

Why would he be sarcastic to his own constituency?

What does this have to do with anything?

Can't say I'm surprised though considering none of the Democrats actually read Obamacare when they voted to pass it anyways.

The large amount of government buildings and housing space for DC staffers in the area you interned probably priced things out of league for a lot of small bookstores. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the DC bureaucracy just orders their books online.

By the way, given that there's conservative organizations in DC as well, does your little anecdote imply that DC conservative ain't not like no book learnin'?

Should've tried google, as there are a lot of bookstores in DC, even if they're "five miles" from your internship site.

Yeah, because they don't tell you what to do. lol.

Any person that thinks people should trust the church instead of educated people is certainly not someone I would want to vote for as a president.

Funny how Republicans like Santorum embrace economic elitists like Romney, but attack people like the President for being intellectual elitists.

I honestly don't know if he's being sarcastic. I don't think he's smart enough to intentionally speak to two different audiences, anti-intellectuals that will him literally and want to be intellectuals that will take him sarcastically.
