Before you go, realize that it's going to be a much longer service than you are used to. It also may require some stamina that your usual church doesn't. I'd try something a bit milder first like an AME church. They have the rousing sermon that you may be looking for without the long, long service. It's also got a more definate ending time than some of the others. The more fundamentalist you go, with any church, black or white, the longer the service is going to be.
You haven't been to a long service until you've had an Irish sermon, especially if the priest has had a few, such as at Christmas time.
If guilt is you thing I recommend the the more conservative catholic churches, such as a Christmas eve midnight mass. Tell them you use contraceptives not marries, only go to church on weddings, funerals and Christmas, and not a fan of Easter, especially the whole Lent thing.
Personally I like the church in Blues Brothers with James Emmanuel Brown preaching.
Op you seem to be searching for some kind of aesthetic. I think it could be an experience for you, it may broaden you horizons. I suggest not having any expectations at all. Just go to check to out.
Going to a 'soul' church, such as Baptist is going to be vastly different from goign to an Ethiopian Orthodox church, or a Rastafari Church.
