I think it goes back much further than that - to when the Aryan tribes in north invaded Dravidian areas.

That's correct, puddingmouse. I assume everyone has heard of the caste system? The Sanskrit word for caste is actually the same as the Sanskrit word for colour ('varna').

I seem to recall a Guardian article in which it was claimed that skin whitening creams outsell Coca-Cola in India.

As far as it goes for me, I prefer my Indian ladies darker skinned.

Latin Americans are the same way. White skin is an indication of status there. Mestizos like to play up their "Spanish" ancestry, dye their hair, lighten their skin, etc.

Pure Iberians in Spain are of Celtic Origin. The darker Spaniard is the result of intermarriage between the Celtic types and the Muslim types who ancestors came from north Africa and Arabia. There was much frigging in the rigging between Celtic types from the north and darker skin type from al Andalus. Spain have a very heavy Islamic heritage both culturally and genetically.

I had a teacher from Kenya my first semester, he had worked really hard to put himself through school, first in Kenya, then the UK, then the US and was teaching something like 12 classes at 4 different campuses when i took his class.. a load of the black kids in my class though, well, he's black too, so we can slack off and have attitudes.. and oh man were they in for a rude awakening.. he had NO tolerance at all for them.. and held them to much higher standards than the rest of the class..
