There was also the heartwarming movie Chimpanzee, about an old male who adopts an orphaned boy. Of course, there wasn't any female getting in the way.

Our species is somewhat unique in that we are heavily dependent upon money for survival.

If a woman was prudent in her selection of the men who had the honour of impregnating her, then her children will generate a long stream of good income through child-support payments. A man who moved in with her would be wise to make certain that her children remained alive, or the income stream would be cut off abruptly.

However, many women tend to be unwise in their early selection of men for stud service, and may end up having to settle eventually for hooking a Nice Guy™ who will be willing to support her brood financially.
