Isn't it more the case that it's human beings and they are invariably far from perfect

I've always seen the average Councillor as a loud-mouthed big head, seeking to look out for his own interests and those of his friends - usually all are in business of some kind.

Yeah, but coupled with the fact that parties like UKIP, The Finns Party and the PVV are popular political parties and not accepting those who are well within the 'political bubble', you do get some people standing for election who say stupid things and are moronic enough to share it under their own name. Before social networking sites like Facebook, a lot of these councillors and their ravings probably wouldn't have seen the light of day.
