I think that's crazy charging money for empty bedrooms. This woman was obviously poor and struggled taking care of her kids financially and then she gets charged this tax she couldn't even afford. I'm so glad to live in the USA where they don't charge you extra money such as for empty rooms in your home. Is this something new they are doing?

Yes, it's a new thing but not actually a tax.

People receiving benefits are have their payments reduced if there is excessive bedroom space as determined by new government standards.

The person then needs to find money from somewhere else to pay the rent or mortgage.

When did it take effect and why are they doing this?

It started on April 1st, this year with the aim to cut the amount spent on benefits.

meanwhile, every pound lost on benefit fraud is outnumbered by every pound lost to corporate tax evasion by seventy to one.

Good luck with that, seems like the majority prefer to be sheep.

But the politicians wine and dine out on some of that tax fraud, why would they?

If you can afford to have a bank account in Dubai, Switzerland or the West indies you can live in the UK without having to pay tax.

The reason the government doesnt go after the bastards is because they are in their pockets. Its all careerism and no principle on the part of the politicians.

The benefit 'cheats' are just a scapegoat to distract people from the real villainy. The 'bedroom tax' regardless of whether or not you agree with that handle is just the latest chapter in the agenda to demonise ordinary people that dare rely on state help. Fortunately though it seems to have backfired on them, big style. We're now seeing the worst public discontent since the poll tax dispute.

I think stories like this are exactly what the government wants. They are putting pressure on to get rid of people.

It is a shame for this woman and her family.

I agree. I think that Cameron has murderous intentions and this fact must be made better known and accepted. I think unfortunately that people are reluctant to believe it but the case can be made and he is guilty. It's an injustice that he keeps getting away with it and believes clearly that this will continue.

I wonder what would have happened if she didn't pay her bedroom taxes?

Was very sad - think the government had no idea what this could do to people. Someone has lost a grandmother, mother, daughter, aunt.

OMG and Americans complain about taxes. This is ridiculous and should be unconstitutional.
