a. Affirmative Action gives preference in education and hiring to non-whites, regardless of merit.
b. Discriminating against people because of their race is racism.
: : Affirmative Action is racist.

Discriminating against all whites for the minority of white supremacists is like discriminating against all Mexicans because of a minority of capos de la drogas.

Our political and economic systems still carry huge vestiges of white supremacy; they are imbued with it.

Affirmative action really only effects white folks that would barely be accepted anyway.
If you are really bright it does not effect you.

Evidence, please?

Besides, "only affects white folks" defines its racist effect.

Okay who is kept out of Harvard because of Affirmative action?
The cream of the crop high flying 4.0 perfect ACT SAT students or the folks that are on the bubble?
an easier illustration is the US postal service they give an exam and you get points for being a veteran, a minority etc.

It has been a while so the numbers given are arbitrary but lets say the test is out of 100 vets are given +10 minorities +5 (I remember the vets getting more "free" points than minorities). you need an 80 to be hired.

let there be six people.

Bob a Vietnam vet he scores a natural 74 get + 10 so his score 84 and he is hired.
Lenny is a white non-vet scores a 50 is passed over.
Tim is a White non-vet scores a 95 and is hired.
Jerry is black Vietnam vet score a 50 get + 15 so his score is 65 he is shown the door.
Paul is a Black non-vet scores a 75 +5 give him 80 he is is hired.
Kyle is Paul's best white friend he also scores a 75, does not get the job.

Who is hurt by this? The answer is obviously Kyle.
Is the Post office and thus all of us junk mail recipients harmed by losing one of the best and the brightest?
not really Kyle was not really all that good.
Even if it was direct competition i.e. the top 4 are hired we still are not missing out by losing Kyle.
The cream black or white still rises to the top. Affirmative Action effects those at the threshold.
and if you truly believe in "Meritocracy" screw those guys.

I learn to be a jack of all trades and speak multiple languages to bypass affirmative action to ensure a 90% hire rate when applying for a job. Also ommiting having asd until after being hired to bypass hidden discrimination. If I am layed off regardless of skill and hard work to make way for an illegal immigrant with no experience then thats when things will get fishy.

Asian Americans.

[img][800:523]http://www.theamericanconservative.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/asians-large.jpg[/img]

Only Caltech (no affirmative action) seems to have a proportion of Asian students equivalent to the population development, while Ivy League universities only enroll Asian Americans at half the rate one would expect. And Asian enrollment at Harvard has actually decreased since the early 1990s even though the total Asian population in the US is increasing rapidly.

Apparently, some Asian Americans refuse to check the "race" box on their application to Harvard, because it will reduce their chances of being admitted.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/0 ... 51045.html

Another look at the same problem - Medical school acceptance rates by race and GPA (sorry for the distorted image. It should be readable):
[img][800:344]http://www.aei-ideas.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/medschool2.jpg[/img]

Apparently, someone thinks that Asians make poor doctors... ... someone also needs to take a look at that 2012 Nobel Prize in Medicine to that Japanese dude... clearly, it was unwarranted, as Asians are so obviously unfit to practice medicine...

And last time I checked, Asian Americans are not routinely referred to as "white"... or slave owners, for that matter...

Affirmative Action should be ended immediately.

For a start, yes, I believe it is racist. It isn't an atrocity, sure, but it is still racist and unfair.

Secondly, it harms the very people it is designed to benefit.

The black student who is allowed into Harvard with a GPA significantly below that of their classmates is nearly always going to be a poorer student than their classmates. Maybe they worked hard in a terrible school, and that's commendable and a skill in itself, but a perfect GPA is itself the result of hard work. Usually, they're not going to have any real academic advantages over their peers.

Without Affirmative Action, those black students could be the best students at "lesser" colleges. Maybe they go to Maryland or Kansas or Virginia or Miami or Toronto. They will be top of the class and come away with a great degree.

They also miss out on the "networking" opportunities of a top university, of course, and the sheer prestige of graduating from Harvard or Brown or Princeton or MIT or Yale (I don't know if they all do AA). However, it is better to be the best student at a lesser university than an average or poor student at a great university. They are more employable, they win more awards, and they are published more at the start of their career. I don't have the data to hand right now, but I will post it when I get home.

Proposition 209 (also known as the "California Civil Rights Initiative") is a California ballot proposition which, upon approval in November 1996, amended the state constitution to prohibit state government institutions from considering race, sex, or ethnicity, specifically in the areas of public employment, public contracting or public education. Since the passage of Proposition 209, higher graduation rates have been posted at University of California schools. The African American graduation rate at the University of California, Berkeley increased by 6.5 percent, and rose even more dramatically, from 26 percent to 52 percent, at the University of California, San Diego.

Eliminating Affirmative action in California's government institution - especially schools and universities - has actually increased the success rate of minority graduations in the California state university system. There seems to be a strong causal connection between eliminating Affirmative Action and a greater number of minority graduates from state universities.

So, why are Mexicans and other minorities still trying to sneak into California illegally, if they can no longer get a free ride through California's state university system?

I personally believe that Affirmative Action was necessary at the time of implementation, but has outlived its usefulness (and effectiveness) by about 40 years.

Of course it increased the percentage that is what happens when you decrease the denominator. It certainly did not increase the number of black graduates which I assume is the propose of the law.

Your government allowed it. And the detrimental effects are ongoing.
