I made a post about this a few months ago. It's possible that this restriction dates from an earlier time when a hominid species bred with pigs to create homo sap, or when homo sap bred with some animal to create pigs.

Else, someone might have noticed that bacon smells like burned human (I read about this in Hitchens, God is not Great) and banned the eating of pork for that reason.

I find the pig hybrid story really unlikely. Pigs and humans aren't even that closely related. If there is pig DNA in humans or human DNA in pigs we would probably know by now. As far as we know humans can't have offspring with any other species (and considering the crazy things humans do, if humans could breed with pigs we would definately know... as disturbing as that is).

And the burnt flesh thing: other cultures would probably have noticed that too. Pork is very popular in China and Europe. Why have they not banned pork? I think a reason could be that pigs do better in a wet climate than in a desert, since they dig the ground for roots and seeds and stuff.

People eat wild hogs too. I've eaten quite a bit of pork in my life, if one day a wild hog eats my corpse I feel I don't really have a right to complain. Although usually wild boars live in the forest, and they mostly eat roots and seeds and vegetables and insects. When I was a kid I walked past some bushes in the forest, and there was a hog in there. He/she ran past me from behind, it was pretty scary. The animal probably could have killed me, it must have weighted 10 times as much as I did, but it ran past me. Historically, people have held wild boars in high regard. I do too.

I'm from the Razorback state,we are known for wild hogs. :D I've encountered them in the woods before,a sow and her litter of piglets, she snorted and I ran like hell, could have qualified for the Olympics.People here like to trap them and fatten them on corn before eating them. The Park service wants them off their land, they are destructive to the environment, eating turkey eggs and rooting up the ginseng.Plus the tourists would probably try to pet one and take a selfie with the hog. They are pretty tasty as long as you don't try to eat an old tough boar.

It's all because of the stereotype that pigs are filthy and unclean. In some cultures dogs are seen as the same way and aren't treated like something you cuddle and love as a pet. I've eaten meat on Fridays so I guess I'm going to hell for that along with every other thing I do or don't do.

The Book of Leviticus set out what was "clean" and "unclean" to the Jews. Many animals were simply unsanitary to eat. Today, we'd not eat pork if we didn't have strict controls on raising, slaughtering and preparing pork. Back then, they had no such controls. Just as they could not mix certain items on plates. They didn't have ceramic glazing to prevent cross-contamination as was later developed.

So, the law was both practical and symbolic...making the Jews distinctive from other cultures around them.

In the NT, things had changed, and Jesus showed it was no longer necessary to follow that rule. Being "separate from the world" is something done spiritually...which translates physically as well. The Jews were taught to be "separate" by physical acts alone.

A pig is our closest relitive in the evolutionary chain. Darwin was wrong.

I'm curious about the opinion of Jews and Muslims on these topics

love pork chops with potatoes with dill and pickled cucumber :D

In Judaism, eating forbidden meat carries no penalty (not death, not beating) even though it is forbidden.

If there is no penalty, why don't more Jews eat it? Just a stupid question from one of the many uninitiated.

In America, non-Orthodox Jews eat pretty much what they like to eat. Ditto in Israel. Look up "white steak" sometimes. See also: http://www.thejc.com/lifestyle/food/how ... pork-habit

Actually, I do know what "white steak" is. Good for them.

If I ever go to Israel, I am going to order and eat a burger made with pork, with a nice side order of an Israeli craft beer. With one hand I will have the pork burger, and with the other hand I will have a consenting lady friend's tits.

That is freedom written. Freedom from Islam, freedom from religious repression and superstition, freedom to do as one pleases.
