A friend of mine wore a shirt that said 'music is my religion' to church camp and received some dirty looks.

And I myself am agnostic, though my parents do drag me to church. Hate it. Hate the loud obnoxious people who just won't accept that I don't want to talk to them. Though my decision to become agnostic (actually, it wasn't much of a decision, but rather something I realized about myself) isn't at all based on my disdain for church.

There's preaching and then there's PREACHING!!. The later is more of a continual reprimand and threat, a.k.a. fire & brimstone. I don't respond well to the latter.

I guess derailment of a friendly thread like this was inevitable. Seriously, can we show at least some measure of restraint before marginalizing Christians?

^^^ I don't think anyone consciously derailed the thread, made any derogatory or negative remarks towards the OP or marginalized him. However, the thread has certainly gone off topic which sometimes happens when folk start posting stuff that's not relevant to the request of the OP.

I hope the OP can find some folk here that indeed share his values.

Thank you for sharing your concern, we need to function as a community that accepts all viewpoints and where we can all feel welcome.

This thread hasn't derailed. As someone who has been anointed a Derailer of Threads (also a thread hijacker and thread mugger ) it is my professional opinion that this thread is still on its original rails, un-hijacked, and un-mugged, but just going rather slowly.

Gnostic Christian here..and the bolded words above are the reported real metaphor of words of the real humble Yogi leaning man Jesus..before Emperor Constantine
and early Roman Catholic Cohorts..get together and twist his reported earlier words..to make him into a GOD..and pave the way for Emperor big shot..
to erect a giant statue representing himself as Sun God..while making Jesus a Soldier GOD..to eliminate any naysayers from the NEW way..believe as we say..or the consequence can be death...

What a beautiful place the world will be if we can at least tolerate folks who are different..

And just let them be..

free..

Just passing through..
doubt i'll be back..
but change
is always possible..:)

Have a nice day..
the real dude Jesus is a REALly kool dude..:)
in 'just' my opinion.

Christian here, currently attending a Free Methodist Church, though theologically I look east - as in, Orthodox. Somewhat like Wesley, actually Well, it depends on the theology, for example with gay marriage (a major issue in western Christianity, apparently) I'm 60-80% sure that it's not consistent with a Christian lifestyle, but I'll revise that up or down and narrow or widen it as I study the subject more. As far as Reformed theology goes... I spent several months attending a Reformed church, before I realised with horror what they were teaching.

I say I'm an evangelical orthodox catholic, but neither Evangelical, Orthodox, or Catholic.

It's not uncommon for us Lutherans to describe ourselves as Evangelical Catholics, or Augsburgian Catholics.

I simply call myself a Christian, or a follower of Christ. I really don;t like playing "church politics", with all the divisions over doctrine and such. My basic stance is that if you acknowledge your sins against God, repent for them, and accept Jesus' sacrifice on your behalf...you're in the family. Things like water baptism or whether to cover your head in church don't matter much to me...and I think some in the various denominations focus on them way too much.

To quote Brad Stine: "In the essentials, unity; in the non-essentials, liberty; in all things, love."

So if you do not follow church doctrine, I assume then that you do not accept the Trinity?

I never said I ignored church doctrine, but I don't like all the divisions over things unrelated to salvation. Mike Warnke once put it like this: "...instead of fighting with the world to prove Jesus is the only way, we keep fighting with each other over how to get wet right."

If you don't have a personal relationship with Jesus, no outward practice will make a difference.
