I am dismayed that this discussion hasn't covered the concept of social contract yet.

It's very simple and starts with might makes right, progresses to social structures that have an alpha and others that show deference to alphas, to simple social agreements, to more complex agreements. It's why the study of law is largely a study of language.

Bonobos don't appear to kill their own kind. Who told them to be that way? Why did they agree?
