There's also the concepts of "cynicism" and "misanthropy" of which those mentalities are part of.

You make it sound like it's an either-or, rather than realizing that there's a massive middle ground between being snotty and being ignorant...

...as if the two are even related? If we're going by direct opposites, it'd either be "smart vs. dumb" (which has nothing to do with how you interact with people) or "arrogant vs. humble" (which has nothing to do with intelligence).

Un-f#cking-believable.
It should be obvious that blauSamstag was being witty. You're making ME defend one of your own kind; a liberal.
You should be directing your wrath toward the likes of the dreadful Raptor, who has terrorised this forum's left for several years.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to go about not associating them. Especially because I am a smartass.

One possible association:

ASD person = more inclined for detail thinking
non-ASD person = more inclined for broad thinking

The ASD person may respond with a detail interpretation of what a broad thinker said.

The broad thinker responds, "You know what I mean. Quit being a smartass".

That would be unintentional smartassery. I sometimes do that too by reading too much into what people are telling me which can annoy people. That, and being unnecessarily thorough at times.

I do that stuff on purpose. Especially when someone uses a cuss word where it's funny in a literal sense...

Heheh yes. I had a lot of fun yesterday when my parents got back after being gone for about 2 months and we just sat around joking. I don't care how many people get upset at our humor, it's just who we are and it's great stress relief. We do *try* to be serious on some occasions... but even in grief, while crying, we crack jokes.

It'd only be witty if the words were opposed by definition instead of mere linguistics. Otherwise, it's just empty wordplay and openly subject to criticism.

You got that backward. Its precisely because the two terms are not opposites in meaning, but just sound opposite, that makes his flip comment kinda cute.

In fact...you've got it ....ASS backwards! lol!

But it does raise the serious philosophical question: can a person be BOTH a smartass, AND a dumbass at the same time?

I dunno.

But I wish I had thought of it years ago. A bully I used to work with would make make fun of things others said based upon the literal words the person said, and ignore the obvious thing being said between the lines. I wished I had thought to announce "he thinks he's being a smartass, but he is actually being a dumbass". Sumpin' like that.

Cute, sure; I mean, obviously there's not much to get juxtaposing "smart""a**" with "dumb""a***", but other than being "cute", neither word has much relevancy towards the other with its intended meaning.

Of course, I'm just reading into this more than need be. It's almost like I'm inclined to take things more literally than they should, but that'd just be ridiculous.

I have always been a smartass, intentionally or not. The so-called normal people don't always get what I'm trying to say and so then I end up getting flack. BFD

You really are obsessed with 'liberals', aren't you? Do you secretly long to be one?

 :lmao:

You'll have to try a LOT harder than that to actually 'terrorise' anyone here. 'Raptor', no one is intimidated by you. No one at all.

Liberals are obsessed with progression, conservatives are merely obsessed with hating liberals. That's why their beliefs, stances and morals haven't changed for the last couple centuries. :P

It's a joke, folks, settle down.

Oh, I am just SO relieved. Here all this time I was afraid y'all cried yourselves to sleep every night on account of me.

I slowly learned not to do it when I realized that's why people usually kept escalating their insults towards me and finally shut me up by physically attacking me. The belief that you can beat physical strength with intelligence is very dangerous, especially when you're an arrogant brat with no real reason to consider yourself smarter than your opponent.

I was a smartass as a child, but learned that attitude doesn't go over well with others. And truthfully when I look back at myself, I realize often while I thought I was showing how clever I was I was actually missing another angle completely.
I think autistics are more prone to smartassery because of our black and white thinking. What we think is clear is really grey.

When I get impatient with an illogical argument, I will usually resort to 'smartassery' to end it (or try), which usually gets me into a shedload of trouble....eg:

Admin: "You are not allowed to discuss this on our forum"?

Me: "Why not? I didn't see any reference to it in your board rules or terms of service".

Admin: "It's because the methods you use don't justify the existence of the paranormal"

Me: "Does any method justify it?"

Admin: "I'm just going to go ahead and ban your account for being a smartass now"...

I cop it all the time for being logically blunt whenever I get pissed off.
