As here in America, belonging to any religious organization is seen as a voluntary motion, I fail to see how a religious institution should be able to dictate to Americans who happen to be members who they love. Sure, they can repeat church doctrine, but that church is hardly an all powerful entity that can control how people choose to live. That's what makes being an American better than being a citizen of some theocratic state like Saudi Arabia.

Silly Homophobic religions, they annoy the hell out of me when they knock on my door early in the morning, It is time to take revenge and harass them as door to door athiests!

*shrug* any time someone decides that they are God's special people, there is a risk that they will decide that means they can do sh***y things with impunity.

I've seen the mormon church pay members mortgages when they get laid off, pay for member's psychotherapy that they can't otherwise afford, feed and clothe people, get people into decent and safe housing, find people jobs, find jobs for the unemployable, etc.

I've also seen public safety officials say they'll distribute emergency response information through mormon churches, and when asked what about the 20% or so of the city that isn't mormon, just kinda shrug.

Yes they are a tightly knit group that will help out any conforming members. I still don't have to like anything about it, and I hear they can get very weird towards members who don't conform. That branch of christianity does disturb me and doubtful that is going to change especially after taking that Sociology class from a professor who grew up in Utah in a devout mormon family/community...and had lots to say about it, particularly how disgusting they are to homosexuals or people that don't conform to their respective 'gender roles'.

But its nice they help each other out and allow public safety officials to put information pamphlets in their church for people to pick up I guess.

I used to be Mormon. My dad keeps asking me to come back to church, and I've said I'm not interested and have no desire whatsoever to come back but he won't stop asking. I wish I had some gay parents right now...

Mormons have never been with the times.. they didn't remove racism from their policies until the late 70s. I wouldn't expect better any time soon. They've effectively created a culture where you have no say in the church. If someone strays from the church, even someone's kids, or friends, you're outcasted. Your children can't play with their children. Most people find their only circle of friends is the church, so everyone just kind of stays out of fear. So the church can kind of do whatever the hell they want..

I'm in SLC and I'm not involved in the church, and I never have plans to be. I work in a politically incorrect workplace, so religion is never really brought up.

I admired the Mormons when I was a kid, but after experiencing Utah as a runaway kid back in 1982, I lear.ned to dislike them. The above voluntary submission to totalitarianism is the reason why. --No offence to those who are 'trapped' in Mormonism, or to those who are ex-Mormons, you probably dislike Mormonism more than I for very specific reasons.

I think that those who have banned children of gay parents from the "Church of Latter-Day Saints" may actually have done those children a great favor.

Think about it ... would they have a better chance to grow into well-adjusted adults as members of a repressive religious culture or as members of a free-thinking secular culture?

(... the next day ...)

This is a classic example of an ultimatum going against the party that issued it.

1) An oppressive religious organization issues an ultimatum - "Do things our way or hit the highway".

2) Those on the receiving end take the "highway" option, the oppressive religious organization loses members.

An ultimatum is a demand ("Conform!") coupled with an alternative threat ("Leave!"). What the LDSC doesn't seem to realize is that just the issuance of an ultimatum makes them unattractive to free-thinking people everywhere.

The only good thing to note is that the LDSC does not issue the same ultimatum as does another religious organization - at least the LDSC did not say "Conform or Die!"
