Raleigh, what is "behind" the Buddha smile is the cessation of suffering. Through the Noble Eightfold Path, and according to the Four Noble Truths, the Buddha created a method that any conscious being can follow to a similar level of enlightenment. He's smiling with joy. In compassion, he wants all others to experience the truth behind what he experienced.
