Who knows: if Hitler were given a "free pass," he might have been accepted into that art college he so desperately wanted to attend.

After his rejection by the art college, Hitler went into a deep depression, and started listening to, and reading, anti-Semitic content. Looking for a scapegoat after this rejection, and after only making Corporal during World War I, he found the Jews to be convenient, indeed.

Have you guys read The Hare with Amber Eyes by Edmund de Waal? It does a brilliant job of evoking the Vienna of Hitler's youth, through chronicling the lives of the wealthy Ephrussi family. It was the one thing that gave me some sort of access to the mental landscape where Hitler and his ilk got their ideas about Jews.

After reading the book, I went to Vienna, and realized just how much the big houses on the Ringstrasse define the city, and just how offended a lot of the Austrians of the time were that there were Jews living there.

My ancestors were deposed from tobacco factories, and I should like such a house.

If people need a job to do and find purpose in that, what is the problem.

For that matter, when did they accept legal responsibilities, for such. I have oriented people. I have taken-on financial obligations. I hear floaters and wanderers saying they don't want a heart attack, from the stress of it, but they find food and shelter.

So, why must there be a competition, between labor and capital, unless jealous thieves and haters should want to disgorge me.

I'm not sure I understood everything you wrote, but I'll try to expand on what I wrote, because I forgot to put it in context:

The fascinating thing is of course that the example of the few Jewish families on the Ringstrasse was blown way our of proportion. At the time, the majority of Jews in Vienna were poor rural people running away from pogroms, desperately looking for ways to put food on the table, and Hitler would have seen them in the parts of the city he frequented, as he didn't have much money. The really rich and influential people were the aristocracy, who had estates outside the city, including large swathes of land, and who didn't invite Jews into their homes.

The fascinating thing is how so many people managed to agree to blame every of society's ills on Jews, when Jews in fact had minimal influence on how things were run.

On my mother's side, my family was very much like Tevye's family in "Fiddler on the Roof."

Except they, eventually, moved to the city of Minsk, in Belarus. They migrated from Minsk.
