What? I never advocated stoning people.

It's important to distinguish between science as a process (or method) and science in terms of human endeavour. Racist scientists aren't going to have much success if their test results aren't replicated in the real world.

These "fallists" want to throw the baby out with the bathwater, without having first checked the temperature of the water, let alone washed the baby.

They're entirely reliant on science for providing every single facet of their oh-so-fragile safe space. Presumably they'll be ditching the cameras, the phones, the tablets, the computers, the modern fabrics, the shelter, etc, and relocating to a field for the next talk.

Let it go where it will. I'm not averse to a bit of off-road exploration.

C'mon, remember they're against reason. Of course they're not going to do that—when you're against reason, you don't need to be consistent! In fact, you probably shouldn't be. I'm sure consistency is racist, too. After all, any kind of opression which requires a little bit of thinking on the part of the oppressors is rooted in consistency!

[sarcasm] why is there a woman talking in that video? women's rights are a western colonialist concept! [/sarcasm]

in regard to my sarcastic statement: that actually does reflect the anti-colonial rhetoric of Boko Haram...

I guess finding a post-colonial identity is a process, in which some forces will reject ALL ideas coming from the west because of where they are coming from. Others will be smarter and differentiate between useful and less useful ideas.
Let's hope, as always, that the forces of reason and progress win...

Prominent scientists frequently suppress information that would contradict the ideas on which they have built their careers. Denying this shows how little you know about the history of science. Scientists are especially bad when they comment on things outside of their expertise. Is a true scientist like a true Scotsman?

I think a lot of the posters here reject the idea of colonialism, somehow. Maybe they should read about the experiences of women and minorities who study science. If only those experiences mattered even a fraction as much as their own experiences. :|

This is currently happening a lot with pro/anti climate change data. As a result while we know global warming exists we will not get accurate data on how much and how quickly it impacts humanity and the planet.

If people in both camps would allow the data to be a true representation it would actually achieve what both camps would want.

That's what I'd expect a neo-colonialist racist oppressor such as yourself to say . . .

More seriously, these university students are getting their dumb ideas via Marxism, a quintessentially European ideology. But what they may or may not realize is that their anti-science ideology is wrapping around to fuse with the ideology of Boko Haram, and that may not turn out so well for them.

Plus they'd have to reject the idea on principle, coming from a Westerner.

Hey, does that mean people who call themselves "pro-life" are against antibiotics, too? :D

Other than the joke about genocide, it's cool. Let them believe what they want and don't care about it while it either leads to new science or burns out. We have more worrying issues on our doorstep, assuming you live in a first-world country and care about what happens to the free press and peaceful transitions of power.

I have owned a Volkswagen, and I support reproductive freedom. Both of those were pioneered by scientists who worked for the most awful racists. I'll ditch the racism and keep the science once it's finished.

If you saw genocide, that's a conversation for you and your imagination. I wasn't really looking to take this thread to a weird, dark place, and I'm not sure how you're going to crowbar mass murder in. Might be best to start a new topic for that one.

You do realise the mars thing isn't actually going to happen, right?

If you choose to limit your thinking only to problems that you have little-to-no control over, that's your prerogative. I, on the other hand, am going to continue sharing and commenting on things that I find interesting, things I find amusing, or things that just happen to inspire my whimsy.
