New Orleans is below sea level, though.

so is the netherlands....they built up a very strong levee/dam/dike/whateveryouwannacallit.

the whole below sea level thing is like saying "well it's built on a fault line!" if a 9.0 were to hit and destroy los angeles.

What is everyone's fascination with living below sea level?

well with new orleans it wasn't originally below sea level....it sank over time. i believe the netherlands had the same problem.

and, well, new orleans is just an awesome city regardless of sea level....well except for crime and corruption...but the city itself and much of its personality is great.

Yes but the Netherlands is not located at the delta of one of the world's largest rivers. New Orleans and it's surrounding area had been an ecological nightmare long before Katrina.

The cast and crew of "Wheel of Fortune" were just there last year, but they had to leave early because Hurricane Katrina struck, and luckily, they gave away the big prize before they left. Someone won $100,000. Then, they offered a few trips there on "The Price is Right" and they decided not to air them until after the fact. It took a New Orleans senator to tape a pre-recorded message for the show and re-assure everyone that New Orleans was in such good shape.

Also, I haven't heard any pressing news stories about New Orleans lately.

uh.....at the delta? is this on a difference scale? new orleans is towards the bottom of the river but the delta is a good 50 or so miles down river.

that's because the mainstream media latches on to something for about 5 or so months and milks it for ever possible view till everyone is jaded then they move on to the next story.

what's going on in new orleans right now is that crime has risen dramatically beyond what it was before the population was gone...and that's not per capacita...it's on the whole.

additionally, the army corps of engineers are sitting on their asses with getting the job done of building levees that will actually be able to withstand hurricanes as needed. the federal government is f*****g over new orleans. if the levees were in the hands of private contractors...especially local contractors, the job would be done and ready and as sturdy and sound as you can get. because the people would actually care to save their homes. the army corps of engineers doesn't give a s**t.

nope....don't know...but i think our senators are landrieu and vitter.....and they're both slimey bastards.

it's a shame that bobby jindal didn't win the gubernatorial election back in 2003...he would have been governor and most likely handled everything right. blanco failed the city and failed the state with her poor performance.

hell, jindal probably would be running for president right now on the hurricane katrina platform and kicking guliani's ass with his 9-11 platform.

because the city is good and is worth saving. there's a lot of unique art and culture to the city that you can't find anywhere else. and it's good art and culture...not like the s**t out here in los angeles.
