I actually thought the expense would be much less. That's outrageous.

Even if this was an actual 100% real issue instead of complete BS, it wouldn't justify that kind of expense. If it was a real issue the best way to tackle it would be gradually replacing the male units with female ones when they break down.

What planet are these people on?

 should I say first world problem, plenty of actual problems that money could go towards...don't see how the gender of the street cross stick person matters.

Also I think it's sexist that they depict the stick woman wearing a skirt/dress, hello women wear pants to....

Glad to see such vital issues are being adressed...

I agree. I don't understand why it is considered odd for men to wear skirts.

Presumably a lot of the $8400 in in the cost of wages to people who are actually local residents, rather than factory workers in another countries. Could they be doing something more useful? Or would they just be sitting around waiting for something to do?

That's my only "objection," really. The money could have been spent on something better.

How does something like this even happen?

I mean, when it's being talked about. Someone has to bring up the idea and lots of people presumably have to agree with it. How does the subject get brought up without people just laughing in that person's face or getting something like "Are you actually f*****g serious? $8,600 to change 6 lights, and we're going to change half of all the lights in this whole city? And you think that's a good use of our funding?"

I love guys in skirts. It's such a fashion look and I have so much respect for dudes who try and can pull of fashion trends. Guys in plaid skirts with combat boots are my fave.

On the topic though. There definitely is an issue with representing the "norm" as male but also changing traffic signs is like bottom priority in gender issues lol. Honestly this is just the government trying to avoid having to actually do anything truly useful. They're just going to piss off everyone except idiots who think that dying their armpit hair is feminism lol. Any left leaning person who genuinely cares about social issues is just going to see this as the bs it is.

You know the little man on the pedestrian crossing lights? If you don't, you probably live in a country where the signals say "WALK" and "DON'T WALK". The fair city of Melbourne has decided the male stick figure on pedestrian signals is the cause of "unconscious bias" that could lead to ???

Is this political correctness gone too far? See for yourself!

If the signs had to be replaced anyway, then I don't see any less reason to make them female than male. However most women where I am wear pants these days so what was a "stick man" might as well just be a "stick person".

But if you don't see a problem with women being represented by male symbols and words, why should you have a problem with men represented by female symbols and words? If male symbols and words are standard to you, and female symbols and words are something special, then you do indeed have a bias.

Can we agree that iconography is at one remove from representation?

This is insufficiently inclusive. We need at least nine people.

A male, who should be wearing a hijab, kissing a second male and be of African descent
A female who should be east Asian, wearing trousers and making the infamous Rosie the riveter pose.
The second male, a Latino, who in between kisses with the first male, is at a desk, running a Fortune 500 company.
The fourth person should be of uncertain gender Bruce Caitlyn Jenner receiving his woman of the year award.
A priest, openly pondering if God really exists, offering a quickie wedding to a lesbian couple...
... who are holding a minority child they just adopted, explaining to the priest that they have decided to get a civil partnership instead, because they are really progressive.
A final straight white male, wearing a dress, laying himself across a puddle, so the others might not wet their feet as they cross the road and despite struggling to breathe as he is trampled manages to say how amazing, brave and beautiful Caitlyn is and how much he wants to date him.

Come on mate, we need an armless dwarf in a wheelchair, not everyone can f*****g walk and it's offensive to show these able bodied figures.

In fact, it's offensive to show any figures at all, some people are blind and these figures just aren't inclusive if they can't be viewed by all.

to me it indicates that only women or people wearing dresses are permitted to walk across the road.

My thoughts are like this but less pissed off.

If they were replacing damaged ones then OK sure it's not hurting anyone, but spending quite a lot of money on something symbolic seems silly. Then again, I guess people spend much more on statues.
