In the case of lots of words, the strict meaning matters less than the intent of the person using the word.

That description is so loaded with snark that I doubt any such people would want to identified as part of any such group, and that makes anyone who uses that definition an evolutionist.

And yet still both accurate and fair.

the question should be, should "creationist" be subsumed under the term "flat-earther"?

And a thing about the theory of evolution is that it does not attempt to explain the origin of life anymore than the theory of gravity attempts to explain the origin of the universe. That's a misconception about evolution common among those who object to it.

Hardly. Snark is always inexcusable.

Snark is how one responds to madness fairly. One can't always leave inane opinions unchallenged, but some aren't deserving of being responded to in a serious fashion, snark communicates that. That said, one should be careful to not resort to being snarky when they're clearly wrong - it's better to be merely wrong than snarky and wrong.

It is completely wrong to imply creationists are the opposite or contrast of "sane educated people".

I had a biology teacher in high school who supported evolution who used the word "evolutionist". I guess some supporters do use the word to refer to themselves. More often however it is used by those who object to evolution.

There are so "supporters of evolution". Evolution is as real as gravity.
There are no "evolutionists". People who believe in evolution are called "intelligent".

No, it is NOT "as real as gravity". Stop deluding yourself. People who believe in evolution do so because they hate what religion promotes (which is understandable), and most of them are ex-theists who became upset with God over something that happened in their life, and they think that by denying his/her/its existence they are somehow "getting back" at him (or her, or it).

Evolution has been directly observed. Pesticides have to be changed all the time because insects evolve to become resistant to such.

Well, if you want to broaden the meaning of evolution to include any and all changes that are observed in nature, then we can't deny that that happens. That is, however, not what most people mean by the term. They are usually referring to that process that was first made famous by a certain Mr. Charles Darwin (and I say, "made famous" because he wasn't actually the first person to come up with the idea: the idea had been "floating around" since at least the early 1800's).

That's not merely a change, that's a change caused by interacting with their environment. Those that survive exposure to the poison have offspring better equipped to survive exposure to the poison. That's 'evolution by natural selection'. ;)

Further, since evolutionary theory is compatible with spiritual or religious beliefs, it wouldn't make much sense for one to accept evolutionary theory as some means to get back at god/the gods/whatever.

Uninformed or misinformed seem more fair than 'insane', but ultimately they're spouting nonsense no matter how you want to slice it. Perhaps people who claim the earth is hollow and filled with lizardmen aren't the opposite of 'sane educated people' either, but they're still spewing objectively false nonsense.

No. I'm a Christian, and I wholeheartedly believe in evolution.
