The fruits of diversity. I suspect this isn't the final curtain though, America as we know it might have another decade yet. But the direction and final destination is obvious to many more people now. I no longer look like a sandwich board wearing lunatic when I said some years ago that civil war, partition along ethnic lines, ethno-religious cleansing and all manner of related horrors was in America's near future.

I strongly disagree. I'd say about half of the American population is decent enough (though ignorant about the rest of the world plus their own country), the other half are happily cheering for a corrupt narcissistic conman and bullying anybody who dares to oppose him with insults and even death threats. Of course now liberals and democrats are doing a lot of bullying and death threats of their own. So yeah, I think a lot of Americans really are just terrible people coming from both the right side of politics and the left side. Of course things were never this bad until Trump became president. So did Trump turn a lot of Americans crazy or did he simply pull the veil off the real face of America and expose us for the terrible people we really are?

that is prolly the #1 worst thing he did, to pull the scab off of amuuurica's festering sociopathy.

to quote an infamous person, "why can't we all just get along?" a plaintive cry in the wilderness.

I still think that a relatively small group of d-bags and professional crybabies are making a vast majority of decent people look bad. I've lived in lots of states, and in lots of ethnic and economic rungs. The majority of my neighbors have invariably been fine people. If the kids committed crimes, the parents grieved.

I do think that our leadership class, on both sides, isn't exactly covering itself in glory, though.

if we had real leaders at all levels, the "professional crybabies and d-bags" wouldn't have a platform to do their dirt. but there just aren't enough adults in the room, anywhere.

Agree 1000% Everyone tries to exploit every problem to advance their dubious cause. And social media fans the flames. But if I were to grab a beer with my neighbors I think they'd be fine

I bet your Magaland doesn't compare to mine. Your state is still a very liberal state. You know I'm from Georgia and you can't drive anywhere here without seeing a "Trump Pence 2020" sign. Also our governor is Brian Kemp and well... you know he's bad if even Trump thinks his policies to reopen Georgia before the pandemic is over are crazy. :|

Atlanta is like the reverse of that. A blue blotch in a sea of red.

Speaking of red, isn't it ironic how during the MacCarthy era the conservatives used to say "Better dead than red!" when referring to communism and yet we are now facing a takeover of red-hat wearing MAGAs from the conservative red states? :nerdy:

All I know is Atlanta is nothing like the rest of Georgia.

I think for this to really take a hard turn in any direction it would take a catalyzing event.

What seems painfully obvious - economy and economy reduced by COVID is probably the biggest factor in the general pain people are feeling. You then have on top of it all kinds of meme farms in other countries conducting espionage on us across social media (trying to divide and weaken) and then you have all of the disaffected people who have a very low threshold for rioting, people who'd be miserable no matter what and are looking for an outlet to take it out on - you see that in Portland and we saw it in DC a bit back, and certain people with vested interests are even transporting some of these people around the country to stir things up.

This seems like the kind of thing that happens when what should be the 'adults' in the room are either kept out of leadership or are straight-jacketed into silence knowing one word out of context or even just an accusation could destroy them.

To me the country 'burning' is a side-effect of something much more fundamental, and I think a really big piece of it is secular humanism, especially secular humanism with neoliberalism, being tone-deaf to the animal and irrational side of what it is to be human. Hence all sorts of great ideas that can't work in the real world like free global trade without a safety net or institutions and public/civic ethos to ease the transition ends up happening.

I have to keep turning this back to Mark Blyth. Look up his 'Global Trumpism' lecture from late 2016 before Trump won the election, look up his interviews on his book Angrynomics. He explains better than anyone I've seen exactly what's been happening since the early 1970's economically and what got us here (his 'How We Got Here and Why' lecture is excellent as well).

As far as Trump - he's essentially a 'in the threads' chaos magician or alchemist. He knows how to take disorder and craft it into what he wants it to be. He's a strange enough case that if you're betting on him to be evil you can't even count on him for that - he'll do all sorts of things to help people but he'll lie almost every third or fourth word just to keep anything from sticking, to be able to manipulate the media, manipulate the voting base, etc.. I hate to say it but as a country, with the maturity level we have and how we've been running our institutions, our orange spirit animal is a perfect fit for us as a country right now.
