Why do stupid people sound so confident?
One reason may be that they do not know what they do not know.  Another may be that they think they know everything -- like when foreign citizens who have never visited America claim to know all about how our culture and society is run, while they also deny the existence of the obvious problems in their own countries.

Ignorance and pride ... pride and ignorance ...

Then you have the hubris of people thinking *they* have a monopoly on Truth.
Then you have the misconception of people who think they can mindread.
Then you have people who have no tolerance for a difference of opinion.
Then you have people who refuse to see that some/most of the 45% of the voting population might have a legitimate different life perspective.

I don't know why they do that but it really, really annoys me.

You mean people speaking French?
Yeah, I find that annoying too.

This is me making a joke because of someone else posting before the post you were referring to.
It is *not* making fun of you. ;)

And sometimes the "correction" isn't intended for the person with which you are having the conversation, but rather for the benefit of 3rd parties who may see\hear what is being said...Whether to help them gauge the subject being discussed, or the people taking part in the discussion (which naturally includes yourself).

I do this also, but the intended target needs to have an open mind.

With off-line discussions, due to their nature, you are restricted in this regards.

The great benefit to on-line conversations, is their greater "permanence", so (besides others you are unaware of at the time viewing the conversation) there is also the ability to refer back to them, or for others to comes across them at a later date.

Because they're not smart enough to be embarrassed.

I think this has to do with what day-to-day survival looks like for less intelligent people. It's a battle to get any handle on life, especially a battle with other people and their ideas, and consequently they feel forced to take omniscient / authoritative tone as a way to hold their ground.

Is Dunning-Kruger a big part of it? Sure, but I think it's also their life pressures that incline them in this direction.
