any kind of religion doesnt by itself close down peoples minds. its religion done badly that closes down peoples minds. this goes for religious findamentalism as well as the countless followers of metaphysically bloated science.

I have absolutely no idea what any of that meant.

You are answering superficially, underlying mechanisms are more interesting to talk about.

You rush to talk about people's limitations, about what people can't do. Do you see that this perspective limits YOU.

We all have boundaries. Are you the kind of person who will try during his lifetime to go beyond them.

I've still got clue one what you're on about. Stop being so zen and answer my straightforward original question.

On the other hand, if you are certain about something, can you still be open minded about it? And if not, is this actually a fault?

Religion is a belief. To believe means to arbitrarily reject other hypotheses in favor of a specific one. Having a closed mind means rejection of other hypotheses. Therefore, beliefs and religion must cause a closed mind. The next question is whether or not the non-believing(belief != religion) person really can exist.

This thread is closed minded because it lacks of the "I hate you Hadron" option :P

well, I think that same question could be asked about atheists.

I believe being closed minded or open minded about religion, it depends on each individual, but also external factors and environment have an influence on it, that the psychological aspect of it, like for example how a person thinking would be if that person has an obsession with religion, with fanatism, having a strong psychological attachment to it for some reason or problem in the past, also which sect that person belongs to, very likely that would be a great influence of such person way of thinking, and how much open or closed minded is.

Holy s**t for once I agree with you AG. Look at how much research and information have been denied or with-held because it went against the popular interpretations of biblical passage. Research and information that could have helped thousands of people.

Some religious people question their faith, from what I understand, when events in their lives lead them to do so. Also choosing not to follow a religion could also be an arbituary practise.

Hopefully not, because I would be one step to condemning myself to perdition in that case.

I believe there may be a lot of christians that are actually open minded, but if you go by the definition Ragtime gives us about what a "True" 'C'hristian is, then I suppose that would lead to be closed minded type, that of "Because the Bible says so. Period" and "I have the truth and other sects don't - therefore I am a True Christian" that kind of thinking.
