Yes, you are right. The Aussie authorities oviously struggle with the English language and what it means. Decriminalisation should mean legasisation though.

I just do not understand the War On Drugs *TM.

I understand it, but I don't understand it. Lots of money to be made keeping it illegal. But it has done so much more harm than it has done any good.

It should be a Heath Dept concern, not a criminal matter.

First up, I want to say that POSSESSION of drugs should be decriminalised. This is to follow up Ante's point of addicts seeking help. If it is not illegal to carry small quantities of drug for personal use, addicts will be more likely to seek help.

However, DEALING in drugs should continue to be illegal, and prison sentences should be doubled for drug dealers, carrying over a certain quantity of the drug i.e. enough to sell to lots of people and make a good profit.

Comrades, as with all industry, both legal and illegal, there is some fat bastard at the top raking it in while the poor addicts are enticed into drug taking, often caused by personal problems or problems fitting in with our ugly capitalist society. It is these profit makers that I want to catch.

The problem with making all drugs legal for dealing is that corporations will develop that will profit legally from other peoples misery, just like these tobacco firms. They will advertise their products in shops, in full view of young kids. Could be scary..........

I have never seen a drug in my entire life, but if available on the High Street, it is ever more visible, and people like me could have easily been tempted.

A last note, drugs are DANGEROUS. Some can cause death. It is not something I think should be encouraged.

or you look at the data from the n etherlands and realize that there will be a very very minor increase on the order of a few percent and a massive decrease in hard drug addiction.

also use. abuse and addiction are not the same thing, pretending they are wont make it so.

I agree with that

I disagree with this, everyone needs to make a living it sucks that the stakes have to be so high for what to some is their way of putting food on the table. Also well I like having good dealers around...I don't wish arrest and prison upon the people selling me the drugs I want. But why should it be doubled because the government might lose money on people selling drugs?

Comrades, as with all industry, both legal and illegal, there is some fat bastard at the top raking it in while the poor addicts are enticed into drug taking, often caused by personal problems or problems fitting in with our ugly capitalist society. It is these profit makers that I want to catch.

Then why double the penalties for small time drug dealers...they aren't the ones on top? Also drugs are not forced on everyone who takes them. I personally willingly self medicate I don't feel enslaved by the cannabis I do that with, I just feel better with it than without...but I am using it as medication so...no sh*t.

The problem with making all drugs legal for dealing is that corporations will develop that will profit legally from other peoples misery, just like these tobacco firms. They will advertise their products in shops, in full view of young kids. Could be scary..........

I think we could have some regulations to avoid that problem...also drugs don't necessarily cause misery...drug abuse can, but I find I quite enjoy the effects of some drugs.

I have never seen a drug in my entire life, but if available on the High Street, it is ever more visible, and people like me could have easily been tempted.

A last note, drugs are DANGEROUS. Some can cause death. It is not something I think should be encouraged.

Driving is dangerous...it cause death. It is not something I think should be encouraged.

I voted yes.

Assuming proper regulation was in place (minimum age to purchase/consume, no driving whilst under the influence, the basics) I see no problem with letting someone put what they want in their bodies.

Prohibition didn't work with alcohol, and it hasn't worked with drugs. It simply brought in the criminal element and an increase in violence, an increase in prison population - for nonviolent crimes - as well as increasing the expense of law enforcement at all levels of government. And guess what? People still use drugs. All that expense is one big FAILURE.

I think if all drugs were legalized and even a portion of the money now spent enforcing them were put into free, voluntary addiction treatment programs, it would be a good thing. I doubt there would be any increase in use, and possibly no decrease either, but there would be a dramatic decrease in the costs involved to the taxpayer, and those who want help wouldn't be afraid to ask for it.

Aside from that I think marijuana is less harmful than alcohol and shouldn't be so stigmatized.

I do think, of course, that all intoxicating substances should be illegal to use when driving or by minors, and that employers have a right to expect employees to be sober on the job. But the whole criminalization of usage and sales has caused more trouble than it's worth.

They should be legalized. That will kill off a lot of the mafia that feeds from it. The addicts would get there dose for a small price, it will be guaranteed quality. Law enforcement will turn its attention to real problems.

Why is it illegal in the first place? The situation can be a bit strange, some pharmaceutical drugs, are really drugs, they are even prescribed to children.

Some people eat Ativans or Zanax by the handful or have a couple/few drinks, or both.. I don't drink much (2-3 drinks in a year) and I don't do pills, I've had 28 ativan in a bottle for the last 12 years, don't touch them (other than the two when I first got them). I have pill addiction and alcohol addiction in my family and I have been addicted to a couple of different things. Now all I ever touch is coffee, cigarettes (Ew) and the kind herb (and candy!! )

If I know I'm going to deal with lots of people or shopping in a busy place, I'll get baked (BF drives) before I go into where ever. Makes my life easier and I'm sure makes me more tolerable to be around. When I'm not baked and I go shopping with the BF, I go in, get what I want and get out in under 5 minutes if I can, speed walking etc. When I go in baked, I tend to actually shop, my short legged boyfriend can keep up with me... though I tend to rock/fidget more while waiting in line for the cashier. I try to absorb more of the conversations with the family, I actually try to jump in and I don't get as upset/flustered when the conversation takes a sharp left on me. Thoughts flow slower, more fluid. I don't massacre my verbal communication as bad. (have to check on that last one to be sure, I know just who to ask)

No physical addiction. I can quit whenever i wish, though admittedly I prefer not to, personal choice.

Should be completely legal for adults.

I watched a programme on British T.V few years ago and apparently only 1% of the herion that comes into Scotland is actually seized by the police, makes you think is it really worth spending so much money trying to control it when it's obviously impossible. I'm wondering if this is the same for other drugs to and not just the heroin problem in Scotland :?:
MDMA is not an addictive drug it's a party drug, is it not the individuals right to take it and have a good time regardless of the fact is could be harmful? There are many, many things that are extremely dangerous, much more than MDMA like rock climbing etc that are completely legal. It doesn't make sense to say "yeah you can climb that cliff with no ropes for an adrenalin rush" but then say "no you can't pop a pill and enjoy the effects".

I don't agree with drug use, but I don't think drastically inflating the price of drugs so cartels and private prison owners can make massive profits and turning drug users into a permanent criminal class that can redeem their selves and find work after serving their prison sentences is a sensible policy. If they legalized it, the price of drugs would fall, the quality would be cleaner, and the problems an addict faces wouldn't be exacerbated by them having to mortgage their house just to support their habit. If a dose of heroin was the same price as a beer or a cigarette, they wouldn't have to go rob someone for their fix.
